Dan Evans
Through to the last 32 of the US Open
Can't see him beating Robredo in the next round but if he does, Federer awaits.
Let's hope he can keep this new found confidence and discipline together.
Either way, reaching the last 32 is great going

Robson in Rd 3 too. Assuming Murray makes it that will be 3 Brits. Probably a recent record.

Evans beat some good players to get to this stage and is now 132 in the live ATP rankings so it's looking good for him as he can gain entry into higher level tournaments.

Just seen he beat Bernard Tomic in the last roundSurprised wrote:Evans beat some good players to get to this stage and is now 132 in the live ATP rankings so it's looking good for him as he can gain entry into higher level tournaments.
If he can beat Tomic, he can give Robredo a good go.
Watched the highlights, he got his ass handed to him in the first set but came back brilliantly. Fair play to him (and he's a fellow brummie, I think? )

Yup, from Hall Green, although the local press here are trying to claim him as one of their ownTheTon wrote:Just seen he beat Bernard Tomic in the last roundSurprised wrote:Evans beat some good players to get to this stage and is now 132 in the live ATP rankings so it's looking good for him as he can gain entry into higher level tournaments.

Re: Dan Evans
astonishing really, Evans hasn't really shown any sort of indication that he was capable of this so far in his career!
Tomic is a bit erratic so could always be capable of throwing in a strange result, but beating nishikori who is a top 15 player is a very good result. Robredo strikes me as the model of consistency, but prefers the clay so if the hard court is fast then who knows...?

He has shown the form in the Davis Cup but not outside of that.
Robredos form at the US is consistent but not great as he has never got past the last 16 (at least not since 2005) but seems to reach that stage regularly.

Re: Dan Evans
Amazing comeback isn't it. He looked like he was down and out in 2010 when he took an indefinate break from the game after a string of disciplinary problems.

Fair play, it was a good run while it lasted.
Dumped out by Robredo in 4 sets.

Re: Dan Evans
It looks like Dan Evans got off lightly last year when Tomic's dad said Evans wasn't good enough to practice with him:
"John Tomic, the father and coach of Australian world number 52 Bernard, has been sentenced to eight months in prison after he beat up his son's practice partner in a Madrid street in May."

(he actually doesn't have to serve any time as it is under 2 years - some bizarre Spanish law)

In general, in Spanish law, if both parties are found to caary some responsibility then any sentance is waived due to the Double Fault ruling

Stupid from his point of view of course, but not sure if recreational drugs should really be a matter for sport's governing bodies. They should try to stop people cheating, not take the role of moral guardians/law of the land.

Will put sponsors off for sure. Just when his career was in the ascendancy.

Re: Dan Evans
Yeah, just wondering if bans are really the right thing in this scenario, if it's not performance enhancing... they don't ban actors and musicians for a year for setting a bad example by taking drugs do they?bluenosey wrote:Not a cheat, just a very silly boy.forestfan wrote:Stupid from his point of view of course, but not sure if recreational drugs should really be a matter for sport's governing bodies. At 27 (didn't realise he was that old, that was pretty old for a tennis player before the current big five) it's probably career-ending in terms of ever returning to the top 50, playing Davis Cup again etc.

I thought cocaine was considered performance enhancing, although I'm sure it wasn't used in that way in this case.
