West Brom - Expected Line-Ups 13 August 2016

Post by FootballWriter2 »

Report written 3 August 2016. Further updates to come in the run-up to West Brom's opening match away to Crystal Palace on Saturday 13 August at 3pm.

Last Season Stats

Last season Tony Pulis guided West Bromwich Albion to a solid if unspectacular 14th place finish in the Premier League. However, many fans would say that the team underperformed and for most of the season seemed to be in a fight against relegation rather than looking towards the top end of the table. But with what looks like a target of just staying in the premier league given to the manager this was accomplished. But last season was a case of too few goals scored and a defensively minded team. This will not be looked upon favorably by the fans in the season to come.

Manager

As previously mentioned Tony Pulis' tactics hark back to an era of football which seems to be nearly extinct in today’s footballing climate. However as well of those that think the style he imposes on his teams is a little draconian there are also those especially at Stoke for example that would say he was very successful with his methods. His first priority is to defend properly and with as many players as possible. Last season he played a back four comprising wholly of central defenders. This can lead to a more direct brand of football and certainly flair players don’t really get a look in these kind of teams. Expect a 4-1-4-1 variation on 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 variation on 4-5-1 system to be used.

Defence

Firstly, the goal keepers.

Ben Foster – The experienced goal keeper will be looking to maintain his place as first choice for the new season. Last season made 19 appearances.

Boaz Myhill – Last season was in a battle with Ben Foster to be first choice. Looks set to continue in the coming season. Last season made 21 appearances.

The Defenders include.

Craig Dawson – One of the mainstays of the defence. Craig Dawson looks to continue from where he left off last season. He made 41 appearances scoring 3 goals.

Gareth McAuley – The veteran central defender looks set to continue at the heart of the defence in the new season. Last season he made 41 appearances scoring 2 goals.

Jonny Evans – The Ex-Manchester united defender will be in his second season at the club looking to carry on where he left off last season. The versatile Northern Ireland international made 34 appearances scoring 1 goal.

Jonas Olsson – The experienced defender will be looking to slot back into life in the back four. Last season he made 30 appearances scoring 1 goal.

Chris Brunt – Is just coming back from a knee injury sustained last season. It doesn’t look like he’ll be fit enough in time for the start of the new season.

James Chester – The experienced defender will be looking to gain a foothold in the starting eleven but may find opportunities hard to come by again this season. However, he still managed to play in 27 games last season scoring 2 goals.

Sebastian Pocognoli – The Belgian full backs opportunities have been limited since the arrival of Tony Pulis. This trend sets to continue into the new season.

Cristian Gamboa – The Costa Rican full back again has found opportunities of first team football difficult since joining the Baggies.

Midfielders

Darren Fletcher – The club captain and driving force in the heart of midfield, Darren Fletcher will be looking to guide the team further up the table this coming season. The Scotland international made 42 appearances scoring 3 goals last season.

Craig Gardner – The versatile midfield player seems to be a solid bet to play somewhere in the Baggies midfield this season. Last season he played in 38 games scoring 3 goals.

James McClean – The combative winger apparently isn’t too well liked by all of the fans at West Bromwich Albion. But that didn’t deter him last season playing in 42 games and scoring 2 goals.

Claudio Yacob – The Argentinian midfield anchorman will look to reprise his role screening the back four again this season. The fans favourite made 38 appearances last season.

James Morrison – The Scottish midfielder is the Baggies longest serving player. But last season was not first choice in the Tony Pulis midfield. He made 19 appearances scoring 4 goals.

Callum McManaman – The adaptable winger will be looking for more game time this season. However, he may find his playing chances limited due to the arrival of Matt Phillips. Last season he only notched up 12 appearances.

Jonathan Leko – The young attacking midfielder will be looking to improve on his game time from last season after notching up 6 appearances.

Matt Phillips – The Scottish international winger signed from QPR in July will be looking to make an immediate impact. Last season at QPR he made 45 appearances scoring 8 goals.

Forwards

Jose Salomon Rondon – The Venezulan international striker will look to continue to spearhead the Baggies front line this season. After a positive first season in the premier league. Last season he made 40 appearances scoring 10 goals.

Saido Berahino – The young mercurial forward has been the subject of much transfer speculation which would appear to have affected his playing time and performances. Last season he played in 32 games scoring 7 goals.

Rickie Lambert – The veteran target man will surely be the back up again for Jose Salomon Rondon this season. Last season he contributed with 24 appearances scoring 1 goal.

Expected Line-ups

With Saido Berahino widely expected to move on and another forward looking to be on the way, I would expect a team similar to the below to start the season (Possible alternative player marked in brackets):

4-2-3-1 formation:

Goal Keeper: Ben Foster

Defenders: Craig Dawson, Gareth McAuley, Jonny Evans, Jonas Olsson

2 Holding Midfielders: Darren Fletcher, Claudio Yacob

3 Attacking Midfielders: Matt Phillips, Craig Gardner (James Morrison, Saido Berahino), James McClean

Forward: Jose Salomon Rondon (Saido Berahino)

Whatever formation they go with be it 4-1-4-1 or 4-2-3-1 suggested above the prime focus as with all Tony Pulis teams will be on defence. Saido Berahino maybe going, he may not be, but if he stays and plays I think it will be in a deeper role supporting Jose Salomon Rondon. Tony Pulis usually likes to play with just one front man. The goalkeepers again will battle it out for the number 1 spot but I expect Ben Foster to get the nod.

Summary

If they get it right they could be a team where fantasy managers look to their defenders for cut price options such as Ben Foster if he can string a few games together and one of the defenders such as Craig Dawson. Otherwise the obvious option is Jose Salomon Rondon as a cut price forward. Especially as he fits the Tony Pulis system very well. Saido Berahino could be a good option if he moves to another club as well. The new signing Matt Phillips has impressed in preseason and should be in for a start at the beginning of the season and could be a good cut price midfield option.

Albion are the subject of a Chinese takeover, which could spell the end for Pulis.

West Brom have confirmed the takeover of Chinese entrepreneur Guochuan Lai. I don't think anything will happen Pulis just yet but the man in charge may have someone in mind. Part of his statement to the club read. "As of now, all of us are focused on the transfer window and the upcoming season. Our pre-season preparations are progressing and I believe that we have a competitive team, with the right management and coaching staff in place."
