Re: Bowie
In the wrong thread, hopefully a mod will set it right, but I agree with your sentiment.
Rebel Rebel was the first single I ever purchased (with my pocket money) back in '74, and it still stirs the blood.
He had some flops, but enough notable contributions to be called one of the greatest.
The Laughing Gnome apart, he leaves us with an exceptional catalogue of ground breaking music.
RIP

Re: Bowie
Yeah, same feelings here, a very sad day indeed - he was the best.
Remember rushing out to buy Alladin Sane the day it came out. These days have (pretty much) the entire back catalogue on iTunes and regularly listen to an album or three.

Re: Bowie
Was never a huge fan but love all his big early hits and got into him around Ashes to Ashes / Scary Monsters as a youth. Been a bit of stuff I didn't appreciate since but you'd struggle to whittle his best down to two sides of a C90 (for those of us of a certain age).
Plenty of Bowie and related stuff being played on Radio 6 today - a good reminder of his vast catalogue of quality output.
Seemed a decent guy too. RIP.
(as I typed this I looked up and saw a rainbow streaked across a snowy white mountain - not a bad Ziggy impression)

Is there a Brent/Gervais snapshot amongst those images?Tall Paul wrote:Gutted.
Genius is a word bandied around all too easily these days, but Bowie certainly was one. Was listening to his excellent new album just this weekend.

As Murf never a big fan, but for sure an important talent that stood the test of time, think first time saw him was as Davy Jones and the Lower Third, they were a poor mans Who.
Does show how much talent and new thinking came out of the 60's.

Re: Bowie
Listening to Blackstar, it's chilling to think that he must have known he was dying when he wrote/recorded it. I've only heard it a couple of times, but I think it's up there among his best. Incredible for a 69-year-old.
My favourites are, chronologically, Space Oddity, Hunky Dory and Ziggy; then the three "Berlin albums" Low, Heroes and Lodger; then Let's Dance (1983); then Heathen (2002); then The Next Day (2013); and Blackstar.
Farewell to a musical genius.

Re: Bowie
Just checked the Amazon sales chart.
1. Blackstar
2. Blackstar (vinyl!)
3-6 all Bowie
In fact only Adele, Elvis and James Bay (at 20!) feature in the top 20. 17 Bowies - and a load more on page 2 too.
I bought Scary Monsters from there on CD yesterday (only had it on tape!) - first time I have ever used their Autorip function to buy a CD (£4.99 as are many) and get the 'free' MP3 to play instantly. (I won't digress on this thread and ask why the MP3 alone is £6.99....)

straight-up plays, acoustics, re-mixes, interviews and chat - depending on the show.

Re: Bowie
Now 12 Bowie albums in the Top 40 apparently , equalling Elvis's record.
There is a terrific 35-page review of Bowie's career/discography in Q Magazine, read it from start to finish this morning, now listening again to Blackstar.
