Especially the Shields-Up app currently at https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2
(I say currently as by the look of the url this may change (no sure about though) but it can be navigated to from the main page.)
Shields-Up scans you PC and checks for vunerabilities (open ports, file sharing etc). Follow the prompts and do a full scan. Full Stealth mode is what I like to see at the end of it.

One or more ports on this system are operating in FULL STEALTH MODE! Standard Internet behavior requires port connection attempts to be answered with a success or refusal response. Therefore, only an attempt to connect to a nonexistent computer results in no response of either kind. But YOUR computer has DELIBERATELY CHOSEN NOT TO RESPOND (that's very cool!) which represents advanced computer and port stealthing capabilities. A machine configured in this fashion is well hardened to Internet NetBIOS attack and intrusion.
Unable to connect with NetBIOS to your computer.
All attempts to get any information from your computer have FAILED. (This is very uncommon for a Windows networking-based PC.) Relative to vulnerabilities from Windows networking, this computer appears to be VERY SECURE since it is NOT exposing ANY of its internal NetBIOS networking protocol over the Internet.
Your system has achieved a perfect "TruStealth" rating. Not a single packet — solicited or otherwise — was received from your system as a result of our security probing tests. Your system ignored and refused to reply to repeated Pings (ICMP Echo Requests). From the standpoint of the passing probes of any hacker, this machine does not exist on the Internet. Some questionable personal security systems expose their users by attempting to "counter-probe the prober", thus revealing themselves. But your system wisely remained silent in every way. Very nice.

This is an Internet security forum that has saved my ass on several occasions Will talk though, step by step, removal of spyware, viruses, malware, ect. Usually post a HiJackThis Log
Very useful for those that take a more cavalier approach to Internet use

Re: Useful Links - Computers & Technology
My current toolkit and toys - Applications and Open Source Software
Firefox v2.0.015 - Love the add-ons and is great for the developer but plan to look at Safari and Opera as alternatives for performance. Haven’t taken the leap to Firefox 3 yet.
Exact Audio Copy - a ripper recommended by someone on FISO and I haven’t looked back .. currently using LAME3.98b8 to convert audio to MP3
MediaMonkey – My favourite audio management app although haven’t had the time to get into it properly so still hanging on to iTunes too at the moment.
GIMP 2.4.6 – An Open Source version of the very expensive Photoshop .. almost
AVG v8.0 – Anti-Virus, SpyWare, Email Scanner, regular updates, non-intrusive .. sorted
TrackMania Nations Forever – Excellent gameplay for the casual user, also very addictive and the only game I play. I’m still amazed that this quality, arcade style game with its 100 tracks is free .. and also playable on-line. Must get a game controller though, my fingers are killing using those arrow keys.
Audacity 1.2.6 – Digital Audio Editor
Miro 1.2 – Your very own Internet TV set with built-in video recorder
Diino – 2GB free online storage, scheduled backups, free email and blogger but not tried these tools in anger yet.

Open Office from Sun is the completely free open-source answer to your office needs - it is fully compatible with MS Office - including Office 2007 with the latest version (OpenOffice 3.0). There is an application that mimics each of those in MS Office applications, and the interface is very similar (i.e. almost identical in most cases, at least for documnents, spreadsheets and presentations). So if you are buying a cheap computer that just gives you the nagware 30-day trial on windows, this is what you should get. Also works on Mac OS and linux distributions of course.
http://www.ubuntu.com/
For any of you who have been wondering what "linux" is all about, Ubuntu is the most user-friendly version I am aware of. If you download the "ubuntu live" version, you can actually boot up from a CD/DVD drive and test it without having to mess around with your hard-drive - it can even be used from a pen-drive I believe, but it may be a little slow - I haven't tried it. When you decide you want to install you can do-so as dual-boot - i.e. when you switch on your computer it will ask you if you want to use windows or ubuntu. The one tricky issue with a full install is that you have to repartition your hard-drive if you want to dual-boot, but its straightforward if you know what you are doing - if you don't it takes a little searching and a little confidence, or someone to hold your hand. The advantage is that linux has many, many fantastic applications, all of which are free - and you can even run windows emulation on top of linux (WinE), that will allow you to run the majority of windows programs from the Ubunto OS. I use dual-boot, as I was forced to have Windows with my current laptop as I couldn't find an operating-system free one at the time - but I spend 99% of my time in ubuntu - only using windows for my poker applications!
