They are heading towards a shagging now. 32 points from 22 making it 55 for the projected points haul.

Have we had a “Blackpool” team qualify for Europe before? Looks an outside possibility, at least...

Norwich held the record high score for several years til Sheff U got a healthy 54 last season. Leeds on target, just, to, just, beat that even if they don't make Europe.

Ipswich might have been the last promoted (and relegated) side to manage it.

Did Wigan go down when they win the FAC Cup?

Reading missed out on Europe in 2006-07 by just a point, when they ended up with 55 points. Close but no cigar, as they say.

Yes, I think Wigan were the last Championship team to play in Europe. Further back, I think Bradford or someone like that once got in through the fair play league when relegated, and Millwall got in as losing cup finalists (both qualifying situations that no longer apply).

In the more distant past, Welsh teams from lower English divisions got in through winning the Welsh Cup...

As for newly promoted sides, we did it in ‘95, I think Newcastle under Keegan just before, and Ipswich a bit more recently as noted. Sheff Utd obviously close last year.

I kind of miss the Fair Play and Intertoto giving random teams a back door into Europe...

Indeed, my boyhood team was/is Newport County who had the ignominy for so many years of never having managed to win the Welsh Cup (in comparison, Wrexham have won it 23 times, and even Bangor won it 8 times!). Then the County did win it for the first and only time, in 1980, and so qualified for the European Cup Winners Cup... and made it all the way to the Quarter Finals, only to lose over two legs by the narrowest of margins to the top East German side (and eventual losing finalists) Carl Zeiss Jena.

I was of course there on that dramatic night when we got so, so close!

Didn’t some English border teams like Shrewsbury used to play in it as well, but weren’t eligible for Europe as “Welsh” teams?

I presume the Welsh Cup is now only open to teams within the League of Wales pyramid.

Hard to believe they are going to crash down and only score 5 points in their last 13 games. I wonder if that will lead to Bielsa being sacked? 40pts should avoid relegation so he could be safe.

On target for 53.2 (PPG=1.4 * 38 games) so a realistic minimum is quite a bit below that or 50. 40 may be slightly unrealistic but while there is hope....

They could have Charlton/Palace syndrome and just sleepwalk to the finish line once they’re mathematically safe and unlikely to make Europe... but I think it’s unlikely, they employ the same approach no matter what’s at stake it seems, giving them a mix of four-goal victories and similar defeats.

Just looked at the list of teams that have been "Blackpool" over the years.

Most are either still in the Premier League or in the promotion/play-off places in the Championship but a couple, Hull and Blackpool themselves, are in League 1.

And Blackpool have been all the way down to League Two...

What about next year’s candidates? Brentford would be an interesting and hard to predict one if they went up, I think.

I usually go with the most "Blackpool" of the promoted teams, avoiding anyone we've had before or were only recently relegated. Leeds were a bit of an exception but the promoted were all fairly big teams so had some leeway in my pick! Brentford certainly fit the "Blackpool" bill for next year.

On the other hand, we could get Norwich, Watford and Bournemouth straight back...

Leeds certainly weren’t recently relegated, so the obvious one to go for this season!

It's that part of the season in the Premier League marathon, where Leeds are predicted to hit the wall. With Man City, Liverpool and Man Utd in the next three games, then Brighton and Spurs to follow. Expect the word burn out to be used over the next couples of weeks by those punters desperate to be proved right. Leeds have a total of one point from these games earlier in the season. So can it be called burn out if they don't do too well?

Would be a repeat of 10 seasons ago.

Norwich, our 2011/12 'Blackpool' (47 points), replacing our 2019/20 'Blackpool' (54 points), Sheff Utd.
