In all seriousness though, people need to wake up and smell the coffee.
Ask yourself, would you like to work for Clarkson, knowing when can happen if he takes a dim view of you? The answer clearly should be no, so why should someone else for your cheap amusement?

Re: Modern life is rubbish - the evidence thread
We had a major power outage here this morning and everything shut down. Airport closed down, no trams, no buses, shops shut, traffic at standstill as traffic lights were out and drivers just clogged up junctions, no internet, mobile masts only able to last 3 hours, hospitals on emergency power only so surgery cancelled.
And it was only off for about 2 hours!
Without electricity we are totally screwed in this modern world.

Sounds good to me (as long as it is warm!). Probably need the power to come on once a week so I could mow the lawn (I'm too lazy to get a push one).Surprised wrote:We had a major power outage here this morning and everything shut down. What an awful website. It's 95% alien nonsense/pseudo-science/conspiracy theory/celebrity rubbish and 5% badly reported actual news.

Re: Modern life is rubbish - the evidence thread
Sorry to get a bit serious, but I find this particularly disgraceful: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-32769317
Didn't anyone at Thomas Cook have the moral compass to know that keeping that money was wrong in all respect? I think the parents sum it up rather well: "It seems our children's lives are worth only a fraction of Thomas Cook's reputation."
I know it would be a terrible thing for all the honest people who work for the firm, but Thomas Cook deserve to go out of business if that's how they go about it.

Re: Modern life is rubbish - the evidence thread
I'm slightly torn..... isn't this more down to the insurance company and THEIR valuations?
It's sad, but businesses are valued greater than humans. That's why bankers get paid more than nurses or social workers.
I dare say the owners of the twin towers probably got more money than any of the lives that were lost. Or many/most of the companies that resided in there would have received hefty payouts.
Or the London Underground probably got a fair few quid compared to those that lost their lives or got maimed.

But those other incidents aren't down to their own incompetence?
Agree with Tac, they deserve to go out of business. I've never used them anyway but this ensures that I never will.

It was during the proceedings that got me, not what came after. The boss refused to aplogise saying they had done nothing wrong so should not apologise.

They've now donated the payout that they received to unicef.
Too little too late.
Looks like the lawyers got £1.5 to £2m for the case. Nice little earner...

Re: Modern life is rubbish - the evidence thread
Those rides normally have signs on the seats saying the bigger person sits on the outside of the ride so the smaller person doesn't get squished by the G-forces when the ride is spinning. For the small girl to hit her head on the side of the seat seems to me to indicate this mother put her child on the outside of the ride where the mother's weight would be pushing her into the side of the seat and making it much more likely she would get hurt. There's some blame on the funfair operator for not spotting this before they started the ride and correcting it but if there were signs to that effect and they were ignored then it's mainly the mother's fault for being stupid... (and even if there weren't signs she still has to take a lot of responsibility for not just thinking for a few seconds about what was going to happen)

My wife knew Peter Stewart the lawyer who was advising Thomas Cook (he was a known specialist in the travel industry where my wife works) and he died lat the outset of the inquest. In his 50's too and one of the nicest and sharpest guys you have ever met - whoever he was representing.unc.si. wrote:They've now donated the payout that they received to unicef.

A Norwich City football fan was reported for "racially abusive" language by a television viewer during the play-off match at Ipswich Town.
The armchair fan from Bolton phoned Suffolk Police alleging that Ipswich player Tyrone Mings had been abused during the 1-1 draw at Portman Road. Officers scanned footage and arrested a 17-year-old during the match.
Suffolk Police would not disclose the actual language used by the supporter but a spokeswoman said it was not racist.
So lets get this straight, he did swear at the player, but without any racial overtones.
Does this now mean anyone who shouts abusive comments at a football game could be arrested if seen by and a member of public on tv?

Re: Modern life is rubbish - the evidence thread
If they arrested him and it was not racist chances are it was threatening some kind of harm, though even that's a stretch as for that to be illegal as far as I understand it there has to be a credible chance the threat could/would be acted upon...

Another ridiculous example of somebody 'wanting' to be offended and another ridiculous waste of police time and money.
It's a shame they have/had to act upon it. That in itself is a bit of a joke.

Do you not see the irony in the fact that you want to be offended by the story? ??

Re: Modern life is rubbish - the evidence thread
The fact his punishment was to miss two games of football (the equivalent of being grounded)... I don't need to know what he said.
It's ridiculous. However you dress it up.
If people were to get arrested every time somebody at a football match got sworn at... The cells would be very full (and grounds very empty).
And then what about the Sunday league circuit?
Or what about most motorways during rush hour?
I think the fact this was a fan (in a crowd) shouting at somebody he is a) VERY unlikely to ever get within 50ft of b) realistically pose ANY threat whatsoever.
I feel sorry for the fact the police are duty bound to investigate/take action.

Just not buying this 'concern for the children' line, in this current litigious society it's probably concern about liability for these injuries.
Why not go the whole way, ban children from moving any faster than a gentle trot on school property, and totally outlaw any ball games in case a child gets injured.
Out of the question I suppose that those primary school teachers could remind children to be careful if they do handstands or cartwheels at break time.
