I appreciate the condolences (please thank Mrs Richt, Richt) and I am OK Karrde, thanks.

It is a strange old family set up on my mum's side, and really I am more concerned for my mum, but she has a mixture of relief and sadness, but one mainly of relief because she had witnessed a lot of suffering in my nan since around about Christmas time.

There really does come a time when an old body can take no more, and her time had come - and it was at a good time for her and her family. What a life though, eh?

My condolences Jonathan. To think she was born 5 years before the start of WW1 is amazing.

I know what you mean when you write the above - my grandma was 93, and really it was just sheer will power that kept her going, the body just wears out...

sorry for your loss Jonathan - thats a terrific age to make. My next door neighbour died last year at 93, great lady, sounds the same - she was just physically worn out.

Born the year Baden Powell started scouting for boys and in the year of the first London Olympics (also the first Olympic games that allowed women athletes).

It was also the year of the first Model T Ford, and the year that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were killed in Bolivia.

Born in the same year as Ian Fleming, Oskar Schindler, James Stewart and Don Bradman.

David Lloyd George was the Chancellor, with Asquith in Number 10. Roosevelt was the US president.

She'd have been 17 before she could have watched television, and 19 before she could have seen a 'talkie'.

Must be incredible to see how the world has changed over that period.

Oh how sad, I had visions of this thread going on for another few years yet and becoming massively famous.

In all seriousness, as others have said, incredible to imagine how the world has changed in her lifetime. Absolutely incredible.

Not sure if I want Pa chatting up my nan It makes a good read going back through the posts, which as cheryl says has been a good one and it would have been nice to have run long. Thanks to everyone who contributed for the birthday celebrations and now her passing. Only until Christmas did she really suffer any problems and got the hump that she wasn't in the home she had been for at least 70 years.

I actually had a night out with a Doris last night.

(She is a young puppy (a King Charles??) at my dog's training classes).

RIP Doris, you deserve it after 104, nearly 105 years.

PS My Nan is "only" 95 so I've set her a daily exercise routine and strict diet so she can compete with the best, not that I'm competitve or anything

Well, it's working. Nan turned 100 today

We had the main celebration on Sunday but quite a few turned up today. She's still living in the same council house, which has been her's since 1947. Still fiercely independent but like anyone of that age, she has good days and bad days.

17 October 1917 was when Nan entered the world. The same month as the Battle of Passchendale and the Russian Revolution. She's certainly seen a few changes over the years.

Happy Birthday to Bluenosey Senior.

My folks had a similar card last week for their 60th Wedding Anniversary. One of my elderly relatives is 99 (not exactly sure how she's related to me- I've got a very big and very complicated family - comes from growing up in the country - always had to be a bit careful who you went out with when I was a kid...). Anyway, she reckons the secret to old age is a glass of whisky every night, so there's hope for me yet. She's quite a connoisseur actually - likes Islay malts

My remaining grandad is on 94. He served in WW2, and because he was in the backup services on D-Day I found out recently he is entitled to the Legion D'honneur from the French government.

Massive congratulations, Bluenosey snr snr. My paternal grandmother made it to her mid nineties, and my maternal grandfather is still kicking it large in his mid nineties (WWII RAF pilot) (still has the moustache). Long may they all live.

I think that makes him just about my oldest ancestor ever (I've done a lot of family history).
