No chance, Millie sounds like a hard-as-nail 1930s Lahndahn girl from one of those slightly risque BBC dramas featuring theft, violence and at least hints of lesbian sexuality.Yer Old Da wrote:Are you from aristocracy J-bag?Jonathan wrote:It is a classic older persons name. Apologies for bringing that up, Jonathan. Congratulations to your Nan. Here's to another hundred (as people probably never say)

Happy Birthday Doris.
Born the year Baden Powell started scouting for boys and in the year of the first London Olympics (also the first Olympic games that allowed women athletes).
It was also the year of the first Model T Ford, and the year that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were killed in Bolivia.
Born in the same year as Ian Fleming, Oskar Schindler, James Stewart and Don Bradman.
David Lloyd George was the Chanceller, with Asquith in number 10. Roosevelt was the US president.
She'd have been 17 before she could have watched television, and 19 before she could have seen a 'talkie'.
Must be incredible to see how the world has changed over that period.

1979, a vintage year. The year that Pluto moved inside Neptune's orbit for the first time since they were known to science.
Also the year that Los Angeles passed its homosexual rights bill and two families fled East Germany by balloon. A truly remarkable year.
Born in the same year as John Duddy, Randy McMichael and Evonne Hsu.
In television, we saw the first episode of Antiques roadshow, and in politics you were one of the first of Thatchers Children.
Scotland also voted for Home Rule, but it didn't go through as not enough people could be arsed to vote.
They say that you're shaped by the events of the year that you were born in....

Back from the celebrations.
Thanks for all the congrats. One of the best days I have had in a long time. Strange proud feeling really - my mum's mum is 100! She is still as sharp as a tack and it was hard to even get a word in with all of her Tuesday club members around her. Good job her 100th fell on a Tuesday, though, otherwise it would have been a pretty empty room!
Family that I haven't seen in many years have come up for the day from Chichester, and after the club closed where the party was held, we all went back to my sisters. We left at 9.45pm and my nan is still there as I type this, apparently!
I didn't get to ask the excellent question you suggested, Flyman. All far too much going on. She had some sad moments though, because she has lost two sons in her lifetime, but has spent most of the day with a really contented smile on her face - and you can't ask much more than that from a 100 year old!
She was absolutely fascinated by watching all her grandchildren and great grandchildren (17 all told I think) playing the Wii which she hadn't seen before. And btw, Tiger Woods is going to win The Masters, according to my nan, with Justin Rose putting in a good finish!
Thanks for your post, uncsimes. Great stuff. She really has seen massive, massive events in her lifetime. Far more than any of us will likely experience in ours.
I need to make more time to go and visit her in the future, which is one of the first things my nan said to me when I greeted her!
Anyway, I hope some of you will see members of your family meet this milestone, especially if they are in the excellent health my nan is. I reckon she has a few years left in her yet!

Re: My Nan is 102 years old today!
102 is an abundant number and semiperfect number. It is a sphenic number. It is the sum of four consecutive prime numbers (19 + 23 + 29 + 31).
The sum of Euler's totient function φ(x) over the first eighteen integers is 102.
102 is the third base 10 polydivisible number, since 1 is divisible by 1, 10 is divisible by 2 and 102 is divisible by 3. This also shows that 102 is a Harshad number.
April 1908
April 20 – Sunshine train disaster: Two trains collide in Melbourne, Australia, killing 44 people and injuring more than 400.[1]
April 21 – Frederick Cook claims to have reached the North Pole on this date.
April 27 – The 1908 Summer Olympics begin in London.
Could your Nan be one of a very select number alive for 3 London Olympics?????

Just back from a little family get together in the pub. My arms ache, but she will insist on having the bumps every year! You honestly wouldn't know she was 102. She polished off a prawn cocktail starter with French stick, and then salmon and new potatoes, although she didn't think the green beans were cooked well enough. Always something to moan about!
Here's to next year!

Happy Birthday Jon's Gran.
Thought of her as we went past her neck of the woods about lunch-time on the way to Wicksteed Park for the afternoon.
She couldn't have had many birthdays with better weather even at her age, cracking day.

It's still going strong, great place to take the Grand-kids.
We actually went there when I was a kid living in London, around 1962-63 time. Still has the train and the Water Chute left from those days.
