Dry(ish) Drinker

Post by jacksosi »

So, I am doing dry(ish)* January for the first time, after a couple of monster hangovers at xmas & new year inspired me to take a break. I am actually hoping to stop drinking completely, but using this as a test to see how miserable it makes me

Most of AF beers seem just a bit gutless, but some of them are really horrible, looking at you Becks Blue!

We already have a few bits in our beer fridge for drivers that we have whittled it down to from a limited Tesco selection, and I don't mind those:
  • Peroni 0% - 2/5
    Heineken 0% - 2/5
    Flat Tyre 0.5% - 2/5
    Brewdog Nanny State 0.5% - 4/5
    Tesco gin&tonic premixed cans 0.5% - 4/5
I tried a couple of AF Red wines, but they were both terrible, sickly and undrinkable unfortunately.

I have found a website that is going to make it a bit more interesting as they have a loads of beers to try : https://drydrinker.com

I had also kept an article from ShortList with their top 13 AF beers, most of which are available on drydrinker: https://www.shortlist.com/lists/best-al ... fRUJsiD8ms

I have a mixed case of 24 beers arriving tomorrow, let's hope there are a few non-horrible ones in there :?
Hoping Punk AF is decent, as Punk is my usual beer of choice.
I will update this thread as I work through them.

* asterisk to account for the fact that many of the alcohol Free/low alcohol drinks have up to 0.5% alcohol in them. For me that's fine, it still takes 10 of those to equate to one normal beer.

Edit : Changed to ratings of 1-5

I managed 12 (properly) dry days from before Xmas til after New Year recently.

Mind you that was mainly due to the flu

In the past (when I was a moderately heavy drinker) I have done dry January, proved to myself that I could do it and then got bored by mid January so I started again.

you'd proved that you could go the whole month without drinking, so you started drinking again half way through the month?

January’s rubbish enough without cutting out all the enjoyable things completely... I just aim for “eat and drink a bit less crap-uary”.

Good luck to anyone staying off the booze, meat or whatever, anyway...

I rarely drink anyway, so never have to bother with Stoptober or Dry January etc.

I can go weeks without drinking anyway.

Did have a few last Saturday... but not a drop since NYE.

The Drinkaware app is quite good for keeping tabs on how much you drink. I started using it not because I was worried, just thought it would be interesting to know. I have this perception I don’t drink a lot.... and I don’t think I do. But it’s more than my perception.

In fact, in 2019... 306 drink free days 😳

December 68 units (22 drink free days)
November 34 units (24 drink free days)
October 27 units (27 drink free days)

Yep. If something is easy then why bother doing it?

Rarely drink much these days (a bottle of beer and a 'wee' dram is as heavy as it usually gets) so don't need my AFDs (alcohol free days) though I usually stay dry if I am running in the morning or heading into the hills.

So far

Punk AF 0.5%, disappointing as I was looking forward to it, lacking any punch, 3/5

Lucky Saint 0.5%, not bad for a lager, 3/5

Ghost Ship 0.5%, really like this, a decent 4/5

Coast Hazy IPA 0%, basically pineapple juice, very drinkable but no hint of beer, 3/5

Low lander Wit 0%, very citrusy, sharp and as above also very drinkable but no hint of beer, 3/5

Yeah, bit daft it costs the same price as the alcoholic versions, and often more as you can't get multipacks or deals!

I guess they would say there isn't enough demand currently to produce it cheaply.

Erdinger Alkoholfrei (0.5%) - A nice easy drinking lager, and also Isotonic (contains vitamins = healthy!), and reduced calories, and a larger 500ml bottle, AND on available at Tesco, and cheap at £1.30 per bottle or 3 for £3...so an all round winner! 4/5

I saw a really scathing review of that stuff, tastes of nothing apparently!

Seems like duty on normal beer is about 50p/pint so should be a noticeable difference on supermarket bottle/can prices if no duty on 0(.5)% beer

This is great, I really like dark beers, it reminds me of a Leffe Brune (although I haven’t had one for years so I could be miles off Image).

Anyway, full of flavour, a 5/5 from me!

Infinite session Pils : A perfectly fine lager, 4/5

Mikkeller - Henry and his Science : Overriding pineapple flavour, pleasant but not beery enough, 3/5

Big Drop - Hazelnut Porter : Not sure I'm getting much hazelnut, but a nice porter nonetheless, 4/5

It's going well so far, no shockers, and number of decent options.
