You the moral compass

Post by Zimmerman »

Not wanting to count my chickens or anything.... but the champions league final is on the same day as my kids birthday party.

In my (slightly autistic / emotionally numb brain) I’m thinking this is no biggie.

However, am I an absolutely bustard for considering this
Will my Mrs think I’m worse than Fred West for even considering it
Will she want to kill me if I actually do it

Background:
The three of us are very much a family
It’s her 6th birthday party
Her actual birthday is three days later
I’ve never missed a party or birthday before
Up till this point it’s been explicitly understood I would be going (date hasn’t been considered)

Question is why did you sanction it to be on that day anyway?

Got to go mate. It’ll be a interesting story for your daughter in later life. Dad missed my birthday for a CL final trip. “Yeah that was how he ended up with 20 stitches in his arse”

I think missing (one) birthday party of a young child is perfectly acceptable. Buy her a gift from your trip, and she’ll be right as rain when you return.

(If she has her friends round for the party I’d go as far as to say it was madness choosing to spend time with a bunch of 6 year-old girls - who will be more than happy entertaining themselves - over something like a CL Final)

Can't you arrange another smaller and more special party for you all to attend in the days after the match ?

She's due to have a trampoline party on the Saturday.
Im sure we'll be doing something on her actual birthday (its school holidays i think).

No brainer - you're going!

It's her 6th birthday party. No one remembers their 6th birthday party.

You will be there for her actual birthday.

Just explain as a Liverpool fan these opportunities rarely come around. I'm sure she will understand :D

Just go.

Point out that it's probably a once in a lifetime opportunity, and that your daughter will have several more birthday parties. But don't labour your argument, in the first instance and for some days she may not be convinced and may only come around to agreeing that your decision was reasonable weeks later.

But also allow a good budget for the party and make sure that on your return the actual birthday is special.

You will probably have to buy your way out of this one, a holiday for a holiday etc. You should have seen this coming when you were trying to conceive

Asked Mrs B and she said no it had actually been her birthday, but yes if it's just a party. A group of six year old girls won't notice you anyway.

I went to watch Oxford at Wembley on my wedding anniversary, which was grudgingly accepted, and not quite the same.

(Good) parents do enough for their kids as it is - Mum & Dad are allowed their own lives.

Sometimes being physically missing from a family event is unavoidable - kids should learn to handle disappointment early in their lives :)

I wonder what sort of responses I’d get on mumsnet :)

I casually mentioned it over dinner (not quite 3hrs go). Not sure she’s spoke to me since. Not helped that I’ve been watching watching last nights game 😂

I’m guessing this is the calm before the storm. Little girl is just off to bed, and I’m sure we’ll then be discussing it.

Guessing she is largely p***ed off because she has to manage a house of kids on her own!

I would pick your moment and then roll out:

“Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I assure you, it's much more serious than that.”

Definitely have to pick the right moment. Never forget the time I didn’t quite get the timing right with:

“Come on, you’re pregnant, not ill”

ha ha... think i might have made that mistake too.

Anyway - i've been given the green light :D

After an initial frosty guilt inducing "well we'll cancel the party" sucker punch that i hadn't even thought was a possibility... she came up with a solution;
it is the school holidays after all, so we'll just have the party on the day of her birthday (and i can attend). Everyone's a winner and I'm the best dad in the world again. Just need to make sure I don't get arrested whilst i am there.

Sorry to hear you still have to go to the kids' party. I'm sure the collective FISO brain can figure out a way to get out of it that doesn't involve arrest.

As an Afc fan, can think of no sensible reason not to go, my wedding should have been May 8th 1971, but it would have been a bit strange to have it without a groom as no chance me being there on that day, so we got married a week later.
Can she not have 2 parties , 1 at 1 not
