Any twitchers on here?

Post by Zimmerman »

Have got an old bird box in our garden.
Mrs and Daughter have seen birds going in it recently. I’d assumed it was to eat the snails in there (the last/only occupants I’ve ever seen in there).

So I opened it just now, and there’s a nest in there. The bird that had been sat in the next obviously flew off.

I didn’t stop to check if eggs in the nest and quickly closed it again.

My worry is the bird is scared and has fled for good. I hope not.

I didn’t see properly as it was so close and flew so quick... my guess is that it is/was a blue tit.

Possibly a blue tit. Especially if opening is small.

Likely to return if you didn't do too much. Hopefully.

Yep, agree that it is probably blue tits. We had some nest in a bird box in our garden last year and they do go at a rate of knots in and out of the box opening. Because of them we put feeders up (fat ball holders as they are fairly squirrel proof) and now get a wide variety of small birds visit the garden. It's very therapeutic to watch.

My bird box has only seen one nest built. By wasps....

Plenty of vegetation around for all the native birds to nest in though. Seen many nests around from wrens to pheasants. Not seen any yet this year except the crows up in the trees. Seen a robin picking up my dog's hairs to build a nest. Looked like he had whiskers!

We get swifts every year up under the roof (most houses round here do).

Had three boxes in the garden and several feeders all
Seemingly ignored until the tits moved in.

Used to have house martins every year at my old place. Here we get sand martins and swallows nesting nearby instead.

He might well be your man. You can be having a conversation with him about normal topics, football, cricket etc when he'll suddenly lose interest as he's noticed one of his rather boring avian friends fly into sight.
