Milk

Post by Tacalabala »

Something I've been wondering lately but too afraid/tight fisted to try are those special milks, like Cravendale.

Are they really that much better? Or is it a pint sized con?

We've bought/buy it but largely for its long fridge life (rather than taste).

Cant say i notice any difference taste wise.

Cravendale always seems to be on offer at Sainsburys, I think 4 litres (about 8 pints) is £3 so not that much more money, good use by dates (currently in our fridge the milks use by date is 13th September) to achieve this it removes more bacteria using ceramic filters.
I don't like bacteria too much so it's our choice of milk.

Milk ignoramus myself, but Mrs Striker reckons Cravendale is a good buy if it takes several days for a household to use a full bottle, carton, etc.

Interesting, so basically it's nicer than UHT milk.

I'm confused too. I've been buying 'Bio' milk which has a long shelf life and does not taste like UHT. It's become my standard now. Everybody is happy using it.
Haven't tried making cheese with it yet though.

Reminds me of my first job in a pub, used to use to make custard, it's surprising how a shit load of sugar cheers it up.

So, lets just see if I have this right.....

Some marketing bod has come up with the idea of a 'posh UHT' and people are actually buying it

In preference to fresh milk

Cravendale has been about for 14 years and sales are very high so people do actually buy it, more filtered so less bacteria and last longer because of this and the non see through container. In answer to tacs question is it worth the premium( big premium as well sold in 2 ltr bottles and much more than 4pint bottles of fresh milk) imo NO.
