Re: Look to the East tonight... Plus other astronomy chat
I am not sure what time the sun rises in the UK but it seems like you might be able to catch some of this just before sunrise.

Im hoping it is something I can get a glimpse of the but at the moment the forecast is cloudy skies

Re: Look to the East tonight... Plus other astronomy chat
Just back from the park after watching the start of the Geminids meteor shower which has had a fair bit of publicity today in the UK:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/science ... ch-it.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Probably saw about half a dozen in 15 minutes, myself and my 10-year-old went down to the park at the end of our road where there is less light pollution and the sky was amazingly clear and the stars and meteor flashes were easy to see though quite infrequent and scattered across a reasonable area of sky.
Amusing aside - there was a teenage disco going on in the local rugby club building and we frighten several lads crossing the park as we stood staring at the sky. Also, candid mobile phone conversations travel quite well across a tranquil park! Not sure what my lad will remember the most from this evening!

Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn will all appear together in the night sky for the first time since 2005
The alignment will be visible in Britain just before dawn from January 20, but astronomers say the best view is likely to be on the morning of February 5.
The planets will from a diagonal line from the Moon to the horizon and with clear skies and good eyesight, should be visible with the naked eye.

Venus looking mighty bright tonight.
In conjunction with the Pleiades cluster (apparently) all adding together. Possibly the brightest star/planet/cluster I have ever seen.
A little above the horizon, just north of due West (or it was, from here, 15 minutes ago)

Did you catch it? I had to download a compass app to my phone to find out which way was South West, stepped outside and realised it was mainly rooftops and trees in that direction when suddenly a bright light drifted between 2 trees. Kids were not that interested but I was!

The first images from the James Webb space telescope are due to be released to the public on July 12th (15:30 UK time):
https://www.nasa.gov/press-release/nasa ... rst-images
I've no idea what they will show us, but it's pretty much guaranteed to inspire a lot of awe.
