Steve Clarke and Lennon should be on the list?

Re: Crap managers who keep getting jobs
Steve Clarke hasn’t done too bad has he? Predominantly a number two, has done well (relatively speaking) at Kilmarnock. Highest ever points tally apparently.
He took West Brom to their highest league finish in about 30 years when in charge of them too.

Tbh it was him being Scotland's manager that triggered the question as it has been a position for the desperate lately?

Steve Bruce 3 down at half time to Wolves (live on Sky if anybody wants a laugh). 2 for Jota. 1 for Gibbs. 1 for White.

He specialises in the tek 'em doon, tek 'em oop philosophy, he should fit quite well at Newcastle.blahblah wrote: ↑17 Jul 2019, 10:00 There some brilliant Bruce stats here https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48953813 with the last one genuinely
He's probably quite proud of his promotion record, but if you can stay up there's no opportunity of a promotion.
Begs the question, would you rather your club finishes 17th in the EPL twice, or go down in despair and come straight back up in a blaze of glory?

Apparently this is his 11th (twice at Wigan) and is he the only historically Crap one the Prem?
OGS is on stand by after Cardiff and the second half of his tenure last season and FFL after failing at a less difficult challenge than "my most difficult" st Chelsea?

One of them has to succeed (i.e. get top four with their current shower of shite), unless Arsenal get their act together very quickly...

Re: Crap managers who keep getting jobs
He did quite well with Wales (though put in perspective more recently by Coleman, even though his team wasn’t “Bales” but instead featured a demotivated Giggs as star man) and with Blackburn. A curious appointment for City when they needed big-spending experience (like Sven, who they’d just got rid of). Did OK at Fulham but seemingly didn’t settle. Did well at Stoke initially before losing his way. Even Southampton, he initially kept them up. QPR was the only unmitigated disaster on his CV, but that club was so toxic even Pep or Klopp would have flopped.
Still, a generally downward trajectory and I think his time has passed, most likely to pop up in China or somewhere now.

Re: Crap managers who keep getting jobs
Watford appoint Nigel Pearson.
Pearson last managed in the Premier League at Leicester but was sacked in May 2015 and replaced by Claudio Ranieri, with the Foxes winning the Premier League title the following season.
He has since had a five-month spell at Derby County, leaving by mutual consent in October 2016, and at Belgian First Division side OH Leuven, where he was sacked in February 2019.

Bruce edging his way off the crapometer again?
By the way, the passing of Ron Saunders means there’s now only one living Englishman (Howard Wilkinson) who has managed a title-winning team.

Re: Crap managers who keep getting jobs
Wilder’s in his mid 50s, he’s done remarkably well to work his way up from the lower reaches but suspect it’s a bit late for him to land a big job.

Re: Crap managers who keep getting jobs
It was too late before he joined SU.
Sad reality is none of the top clubs will take the SU boss to be their manager. Howe gets linked with lots, but the argument is always ‘no experience of managing top players’ or ‘a team that is expected to compete’.
Rightly or wrongly, that seems to be the drill. That is why we have the carousel of the same old managers at the lower end... and a small pool of those deemed good enough for the big jobs. Or it will take someone like the Ajax manager doing something miraculously to gatecrash it.
On the flip side... you have the likes of Lampard and Ole have managed to get a punt. Evertonians seem to be clamouring for Big Dunc to get a shot despite zero experience.

Re: Crap managers who keep getting jobs
Big name players still get chances to jump the queue, even if a bit less often than 20 years or so ago.
Obviously managers have to get that experience of managing top players somewhere, but it seems near impossible for British managers to catch that break, especially those from a non-playing superstar background. They’re seen as unglamorous, as dinosaurs or nonentities, and the language barrier tends to prevent them going abroad to make a name for themselves (credit to those who have given it a go, yes even Wally...) The grass isn’t always greener on the other side of the Channel/Bay of Biscay though, for every Pep or Jose there’s 10 Marco Silvas.

Re: Crap managers who keep getting jobs
A club will take a punt on Puel, Hasenhüttl or Villa-Boas... but not a punt on a British manager?
I bet if you offered Everton fans Howe - they’d be against it. Doubly so after the performance on Saturday under Ferguson. Will be interesting to see if they give him the job (I assume he must have the badges to even be put in temporary charge)?
