Manchester United Seasonal Blog 2019/20

Post by Darbyand »

With the first summer signing of Daniel James seemingly about to complete:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48539129

...it seems a good time to forget about the shambles of last season, and look forward to the shambles of next season. Can't remember a time I've felt so disenchanted and unable to see a way out of the mire. Teams can be turned around quickly if you shift out the deadwood, and have a good run of bringing in decent players. There's just so much of the former and no sign that the people running the club have a clue about the latter (I'm not including James here, let's give the lad a chance). And the few quality players we do have seem to want out and/or are good-for-nothing chancers . Anyone have any words of hope???

- Liverpool didn’t win the title
- City didn’t win the quadruple
- Arsenal, Spurs and Chelsea have their own issues, so third is up for grabs
- Ole is determined to hold off the might of Wolves, Leicester, Everton and Watford
- You don’t have to start Europe in July
- Woodward is still making millions from Myanmarese noodles ;)
- You’re still top six in the PL. You could be Forest, or Leeds, or Derby, or Sunderland ;)

We might yet be. I was watching The Big Match Revisited the other evening which featured Manchester United in the second tier of English football. It felt strangely prescient

We're not concerned with how other teams are doing only how we are doing - we leave worrying about how United is doing to smaller clubs like City and Liverpool who even now can't help themselves
[as Zims presence on this thread rather than a dedicated Liverpool one demonstrates perfectly  :D ]

My positive for the coming year is that it feels like a step-change is coming in terms of reverting to the more tried and trusted "United-way" model of targeting young promising talent making the step up rather than established mercenary "galacticos" with little left to prove who don't give a shit as long as they get their huge wage.

Still a long way to go, and changes at the top including the Director of Football role still to be addressed, but you have to start (again) somewhere. A lot of deadwood to get through though, so this is going to take a number of transfer windows to resolve rather than just this one...

things will only start to improve if there is a settled manager in place. I cannot see how Ole is settled unless the potential troublemakers in the squad are gone.

Anyone who shows a desire to go elsewhere has to be allowed to go, then start over with whatever is left and ensure the manager is given time.

Would OGS take 6th if offered it now?

I sincerely hope not. 3rd place and either the Europa League and/or a domestic cup should be bare minimum target.

Well, Mickey Hazard has left Chelsea, so that’s one down... sounds like Real want Eriksen over Pogba, so bad news for both Spurs and United. Arsenal fans will be celebrating today...

Apparently Man Utd have agreed to signing Dan James from Swansea.
James, Swansea and Man U will be hoping he does not get injured playing for Wales today and in midweek, assuming he gets selected to play that is.

£40m bid for Aaron Wan-Bissaka rejected by Crystal Palace, who want at least £60m for the England U21 right-back :o

Would be a very good signing (although I'd be a bit miffed if I was Dalot) but £60m is ridiculous (or yet another sad indictment of the current market). If money is no object then go for it but if there is a finite budget then there are other areas that need addressing more urgently. Then again, if you don't get him now...

I feel we're already on the back foot, we needed to be wrapping up two or three new signings before the end of May really. I know that sounds mad but with the way the market is and the extensive pre season planning now required, you can't afford to be having to integrate new players halfway through the tour.

What is going on with the DoF appointment?

It’s a strange one so far... not a lot of activity all round is there? ACoN and American equivalent, I’d have thought they’d be wrapping them up early.

Maybe now the European internationals are out of the way, we’ll start seeing more movement.

Fixtures

Chelsea first up...good chance to give them a bad start in what looks like it will be a tough season for them. IF we can hold off Everton and Wolves  , and Arsenal continue to slide, there's definitely a place for a crap team in the top 4 next season.

Pogba with a veiled request to leave (until he says his words have been misconstrued)
https://amp.theguardian.com/football/20 ... d-juventus

Sell him and move on. Maybe someday a manager will unlock his talent week in week out but it won't be at United.

Edit: video footage, can't wriggle out of that. Presumably planned with his agent. https://twitter.com/ManUtdVines/status/ ... 76385?s=09

They'll be very few sorry to see him go, especially as he thinks that was his best season so far :o . There is a limited few who could afford the fee and wages though so will be interesting to see this play out.

Question is who do we bring in to replace him - lots of rumours surrounding Bruno Fernandes and Youri Tielemans; would be happy with either of those but I'd like to go for Saul Niguez if possible. More than one would be great; all three excellent business.

Sean Longstaff is more of a left-field one for the future I guess - really haven't seen enough of him to know what he is like to be able to offer opinion on his potential. Would be interested to hear opinion from any Geordie on hear about him.

Just when you think Woodward is starting to get it by targeting younger potential over established galacticos, he goes and does this  :o

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/footb ... fford.html
Manchester United will offer Paul Pogba up to £500,000-a-week in desperate attempt to keep midfielder at Old Trafford amid opening £90m bid from Real Madrid
Why oh why would he do this? Has he learnt nothing from the unrest already caused by these mercenaries thinking they are better than everyone else (but in reality only 1/3rd of the time at best)? Let Madrid have the overpaid arrogant part-timer and use the money to get Wan-Bissaka, Maguire and Tielemans for very little uplift.

Maybe it’s the business/share price forcing his hand (not saying I agree, and it’s probably a false economy).

But in a period of not being at the very top and not being in the champions league - do United need a recognisable world star as part of their brand and to keep sponsors happy (or lure new ones)?

Definitely would sum up all that is wrong with the game if this is the case

Or as Murf asks - as Real have probably spent up for this summer, so United need to keep pogba for another year and sell him at top dollar next summer instead? It’s ‘only’ an additional £10m in wages so would probably be doubled or tripled in terms of transfer fee a year nearer the end of his contract if they don’t?

Could well be the case, but as you say sums up all that is wrong with the game if so. I believe we have the option to extend his contract by a further year so don't see a need to improve his contract - especially as I don't think he's earned it yet!

What makes me laugh is that he is talking about possibly needing a new challenge; as if he has already risen to the current challenge in front of him!!!

Could be a load of bollocks in the Daily Mail of course. He's got two years left and United have an option to make that three so more than enough leverage this summer or next if he is to go.

Yeh, surely just bolocks then to fill a few column inches. They’ve run out of players they can pretend you’re signing (and selling). So now it’s contract renewals (Pogba getting rewarded with a £200k pw pay rise is certain to generate them plenty of clicks).
