Wenger Cup - who takes it?

Post by Zimmerman »

forestfan wrote: 02 Apr 2019, 22:28 So, Wenger Cup run-ins...

Arsenal - no top six opponents, but five away games including all the teams in 7th-10th.
Chelsea - go to Liverpool and United, not that many gimmes in there.
Man Utd - Home clashes with City and Chelsea key. Surely have to win the other four at least.
Spurs - Five home games at their new stadium, and City away the only scary one. If they can recover their composure they have the best run-in.
All still have european distractions too.

[63] Arsenal who have been decidedly average away... although in fairness looks like their away games so far include all the toughest teams. On paper 21 points wouldn't be out of the question. With it being Arsenal could be as few as 12.

I think it’s advantage North London as well, though depends if Spurs can drag themselves off the canvas without taking another couple of punches.

What about Best of the Rest/Poisoned Chalice/Kazakhstan in July/Who Wants A Relegation Battle Next Season (i.e. 7th place)? Might not matter anyway depending on FA Cup outcome, but two of the contenders are still in that as well. Big result for Wolves last night, but they will wish they were playing top six sides for the rest of the run-in! Leicester are the ones coming up on the rails...

The drunken stumble for the top four continues... Spurs seemingly with little left in the tank.

Chelsea can effectively reduce the field to three by beating United tomorrow, then it’s just down to who can hold their nerve and find some energy in between European commitments.

Yep, it’s been a ramshackle finish hasn’t it... none of them seem capable of securing that CL position.

Since my post above:

Arsenal 3 points from 12
United 3 from 12
Chelsea 7 from 12
Spurs 9 from 15

Make that three from 15 for Arsenal, with another three-goal pasting...

Can Chelsea and United somehow contrive to both lose this afternoon? I think we should send Leicester and Wolves instead...

In nine days, Spurs, Chelsea, Arsenal & Man Utd have dropped a total of 27 points.

Man City & Liverpool have dropped just 33 between them all season.

Yet the team who finishes runner up will only get the same reward as those in third and fourth.
Those extra 20-25pts will mean diddly squat.

We could award the inaugural Klopp Trophy for the bestest second placed team ever.

And with that result Spurs miss out, I think. They could even be looking at a July start in the Europa...

With no Son or Kane I expect they at best draw with Everton, and if they lose then United (with two gimmes, even allowing for their current form) overtake them. Arsenal have two they will expect to win, Chelsea’s are a bit of a tougher ask but one win from two might be enough. The Europa League final might count for nothing, other than that outdated concept of actual silverware

Arsene must be chuckling to himself.....

There is some serious ineptitude being shown by our so-called top clubs.

Well, we all know about the United situation, Chelsea have stagnated and are totally reliant on Hazard, and Arsenal can’t seem to address the defence and lack of general spine, despite the managerial change. Spurs have just run out of legs and Levy has to take full responsibility for not bringing in numbers, whether they make the top four this season could determine their long term direction of travel - a major European power, or a mid-table club with a flashy white elephant stadium.

Wolves would be in amongst them if they could only beat the weaker sides! A few teams must be starting to believe those sort of ambitions are realistic for next season.

Spurs 9/18
Arsenal 3/15
United 4/12
Chelsea 8/15

Looks like my predictions were way off the mark 🤣

Max available:
Spurs 73 (Everton home)
Chelsea 74 (Watford home / Leicester away)
Arsenal 72 (Brighton home / Burnley away)
United 71 (Huddersfield away / Cardiff home)

Last day is going to be amazing for Sky and viewers at home.

Spurs should beat Everton
Chelsea might struggle, but a draw would be enough
Arsenal have a tough game and might toil their way to a draw
United have two gimmies and ‘should’ take six points

It could come down to goal difference.

In an (in)perfect storm
Arsenal win 72
Spurs draw 71 (28)
—————————————
Chelsea lose 71 (21*)
United win 71 (13*)

(Not forgetting the small matter of the league title being decided). Can’t see City struggling away to Brighton. Even devoid of worry and playing for fun, Brighton simply don’t have enough quality to be a threat. For Liverpool though... Giant slayer Wolves come to town and Liverpool could be without Firmino and Salah (and that’s before the effects of a Barce hangover).

Chelsea pretty much there? It’s going to come down to the battle of North London on the final day, assuming Arsenal don’t do something really silly today...

Didn’t really matter

Need an 8-goal swing on Spurs now, surely that’s too much to ask?

Would have to be Lucrezia Borgia for Arsenal to get top 4.

And she'd have to cook for Burnley too.

Current 6-game form table: Chelsea 6th, Tottenham 9th, Man Utd 16th, Arsenal 17th.

The gap between 2nd and 3rd could be 23 points after tonight.
