Spare a thought for Brechin City who have been relegated from the Scottish Championship without a win all season and picking up only four points from their 36 games! (“Brechin Bad” the best headline I’ve seen for it...)

This doesn’t appear to be a tale of financial meltdown or behind the scenes turmoil, just a team promoted beyond their means. Part-timers taking on the likes of Dundee United and St Mirren week in week out. I suppose they deserve credit for not throwing money they don’t really have at it in a desperate attempt to compete.

I guess this sort of thing is always a possibility in a pyramid system, particularly in smaller countries. Often the feel good factor of promotion will carry a team for a while, and we do see unlikely survival stories from small clubs in unfamiliar high divisions. But if you don’t hit the ground running, there’s always a chance of an outcome like this, if rarely this extreme...
