So how much does that make Coutinho worth £350,000,000. The world has gone mad. Go to a show, always entertained, go to a musical always entertained, go to a pop concert always entertained go to a football match. How many games are eff 💩, thousands a season. Sky and BT have wrecked football for me, it’s not the same. I heard Tom Daley was at Derby County for two weeks coaching diving ido not tell a lie.

Virgil Van Dijk joins LFC for 75m

Post by ZeroRemorse »

Paired with Matip and LFC with a number of good FB's, they could become a really solid defensive unit. Anyone going to pick him up at 5.4m when he's playing regularly?

Tempting though they need to get a better keeper as well. 75m is ridiculous for a defender.

I really doubt that. He's not a great defender. Calm, good on the ball, good range of passing, great at attacking set pieces... he has all that. But he's not positionally very secure and he likes to play more than he likes to defend.

Pair him with a strong partner that can make him concentrate (like Fonte) and he can be very good, he certainly has the physical attributes. But I don't see him improving Liverpool's defence all that much otherwise. They also need a CDM (or to make Can play that position with discipline) if they are really to become solid. But I'm not sure Klopp really wants that if it's at the expense of his rock 'n' roll football.

I have to disagree. LFC struggle in 3 areas defensively, set pieces, counter attacks and awful individual errors.

The previous season he won aerial duels by some distance, this immediately helps LFC with set-piece defending and long balls and his error rate isn't going to be anywhere near as bad as Lovrens.

Matip is a better defender than Fonte too and I think they will make a very good pair.

I agree positionally on the counter-attack and one on one situations he hasn't been tried and tested as much but I think Klopp will have analyzed this and think that VVD can and will be fine in those scenarios. Klopp is very very good in the transfer market and I think his judgment is good on this one, he's exactly what LFC need at CB, I think he will undoubtedly improve LFC defence, which is already quite good at Anfield.

Still only playing for 5th - 6th with Arsenal and once Coutinho & Sanchez go - 5th - 9th?

Chelsea are only an injury or two away from the same fate. :)

Personally, I think LFC are on the verge of something bigger with the right players brought in, their attack is scintillating, if they organize their defence, which it looks like they're doing, they will be a very good team and likely only 2nd to Man City.

After dropping a ridiculous amount of points from poor defending and goalkeeping I'd expect opposition fans to be insecure about LFC signing a quality defender. If they fix those errors they're going to be quite the weapon.

They've kept 3 CS in 4 games and 9 CS in 20 EPL games and added a top defender to eradicate individual errors and protect their set piece.

If any sort of pattern can be established with their cheap FB options they could be great value. Either way, VVD and Matip could be good value at 5.4m each.

Hey, I'm going on what I have seen watching VVD live. You make some good points though, especially about helping at defensive set pieces, he is certainly dominant in the air. But this...
ZeroRemorse wrote:Matip is a better defender than Fonte too and I think they will make a very good pair.
...I would have to disagree with. Obviously it's true now but I was referring to Fonte in his prime when he was playing alongside VVD. That Southampton defence was excellent and Fonte ran it - shouting, pointing, pulling, keeping the shape. He organised it. That kind of leader on the pitch is above all what that Liverpool defence needs. And also what VVD needs for him to be seen at his best in my opinion.

By adding VVD they have improved the CB position individually. But they haven't necessarily improved the defence collectively. That's what I was trying to get at really.

Yeah, I think they need leadership at the back for sure and a new goalkeeper. Mignolet isn't cutting it, that bloke from PSG sounds good, Trapp, well he can be no worse than Mignolet anyway

I really don't know why Liverpool don't get someone like Schmeichel. He's a classy GK and he's not a shrinking violet. You could do a lot worse.

In fairness, Fonte managed to make Lovren look like a top CB (and he is anything but)!

Pickford would've been a great buy for Liverpool, didn't understand why they didn't go for him.

Butland and Heaton should be within their reach, it's crazy how they haven't addressed the keeper situation.

They didn't need the Ox, he's basically a 40m squad player, only started 7 league games, that money should have got a top keeper.

Correct. VVD is a fair bit better than Lovren though. Maybe Liverpool could pair them.

When I was 31 years of age, if I were about to make a change of workplace, my dad would not have too much of an influence on me. Would Kasper's? Would yours?

Also if I may add, there's a reason why Kasper is a Man City Academy graduate. :)

The best thing about this news is it avoiding another tedious month of speculation. Just need Mahrez and the Arsenal guys to get sorted early now (I wish) :)

Nah. Statistically he's on another planet and technically.

And it's no coincidence SOTON defence has turned to custard in his absence.

Lovren is technically great. Its his positioning and gamesense that are the issue.

Lovren is pretty bad in the air.

I hear he takes a cocktail of painkillers before matches. Probably plays a large part in his lack of form.
