Indeedy....
And SAF let Pogba go on a free.

Even the greats make a few mistakes. It doesn't make all their other decisions worthless.
At least Man Utd got Pogba back. Meanwhile KDB is running the show at City while Salah is scoring for fun :x
Matip.....

VvD was seen as obvious in the summer?

Oblak next?

His fee has no doubt been inflated by the sell on clause due to Celtic, reported variously as being between 10% and 20%

£75 million isn't exactly a bargain but over a period of time may become decent value for money. If he can get 8 years of quality defending that leads to winning trophies then at £10 million per year it might be worth it. If it doesn't work out then they can sell him on for a good chunk of cash. If it works out brilliantly then he can go to Barca for double that price.

For Clubs like Liverpool cash is pretty much irrelevant, except when Barca\RM cumma knocking: so it isn't really worth thinking about?

As sickening as it is, it is irrelevant in top flight football now. Its certainly not worth getting too emotional about.

Every year, you think you have seen something mental... and every year it is surpassed and dwarfed.

Whether its paying £20m for Lovren, £28m for Lallana, or £35m for Oxlade Chamberlain (with a soon to be expired contract).

A Chelsea reserve with limited experience can move for £20m (Ake)
Everton paid £30m for Keane
Chelsea paid £50m for Luiz a couple of years ago
Rudiger a backup CB was £34m
Sigurdsson was £44m - despite his past merits, thats starting to appear a little on the steep side for the 28yo)
Danilo a squad boosting full back for £25m

Southampton continuing their trend of being Liverpool's feeder club!

I wonder if they have a direct debit set up...

To be fair Southampton's scouts are a business man's wet dream!

Obviously high and giddy from an eye catching win.
But yesterday’s game (as it fits my agenda) is a good game to highlight Liverpool’s game style.

The all conquering Man City were limited to just four attempts on target. That’s not symptomatic of a team bereft of a defensive game plan.

Liverpool continue to concede from individual errors.
Klopps general approach is not flawed, just some of the personnel are. Obviously it’s one game and the team ‘being up for it’ means the above has to be taken with a pinch of salt (but from watching all their games I feel it’s a good illustration).

I'd like to revisit this. I think VvD is a great pick now. He's really solidified LFC at the back. He wins nearly every aerial ball, looks a goal threat on set pieces too.

It seems Chelsea appear to be playing for 5th and 6th currently.

Clearly 5th unless results go our way, which I don't expect in the current climate. But both Spurs and Liverpool have been known to implode when the pressure is on. We don't deserve top 4, but outside of Man City, who does???

A PPG of 2pts usually easily gets top 4. Liverpool and Man U have that (and with a little in hand such that whoever loses on Saturday still will have) as do Spurs so they all 'deserve' it currently.

Is it too premature (or crass) to say I told you so?
Zimmerman wrote: 28 Dec 2017, 15:31 I think it’s a bit of a misnomer that Liverpool wantingly pour forward or play gung ho football.

They play without an orthodox DM but they compensate for that with the two or three CMs and the pressing game.

Most of Liverpool’s frailties stem from ridiculously poor players/decision making. One less clown should alleviate some of those silly lapses.

Following the Watford game, just 5 goals conceded in 13 league games and an 8th clean sheet.

Has Klopp changed something tactically or is it largely down to personnel?

For me, this is the key point...

Mignolet / Karius -> gone
Lovren -> largely gone
Moreno -> gone
Matip -> largely gone

Meanwhile, Alisson and Robertson have massively improved on their predecessors.

TAA and Gomez are maturing and improving all the time.

van Dijk -> a real presence, so not only does it reduce game time for Matip, Lovren or Klavan (has he left) but you get the gist, but he (VvD) is a rolls royce of a CB (despite some of the comments earlier in this thread).

Top of the league with one game to go
PFA player of the year
Players player of the year
20 clean sheets
1 league defeat (so far)

Looking like a bargain at £75m :)
