One of my treasured possessions is Afc 1950 cup team photo all signed, think brother got it as I was only 3 at the time.
Game has changed so much since first started going (age 4 same as my son), but one thing never changed joy get from watching it.

Following Mike's reply I youtubed the Movietone newsreel to get a bit of feel for the early 50's. Had just gone to serve HIS Majesty in furrin parts where the pictures were not available.
There was Joe Mercer, the man for all seasons and lots of different clubs being shouldered by the Compton brothers and his other team-mates. I didn't know that Arsenal played in a goldish coloured shirt that day. Who might have sponsored them then, if that was available. ? HOOVER.maybe.

An abrupt transfer. Not even a capital letter or a full stop, but no matter, the oldies will soon locate us, Jimmy. Your wartime feature is excellent with a good picture of Bertie Mee and young Wilf. Bertie used to work in my village before going to Arsenal in the early 60's but had not realised he was originally from Bulwell, Nottingham.

Just after suggesting a shirt sponsor for Arsenal as possibly Hoover, even better would have been Brylcreem with the Compton connection. Could DUREX have been considered ?
Seeing the picture of Wilf Mannion reminded me of Raich Carter of Sunderland who came to Derby and helped winthe Cup in '46.

If any FISOers want to join 83 SELECT for the Champions League event this may give a clue why it has that title. Tommymooney, the Hornets man could be my number one grandson and the long list of ages from both 2012 and 2013 was worth reading with my corn flakes.
Many of those names listed never offer anything on the site. To me FISO is required reading every day. More power to those who respond with more than a single word......

For RobRoy

Interesting article on football and WW1, which will be very much in the headlines this year, being the 100th anniversary and all.

http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/FWWfootball.htm

Asquith's Gov't of the day, with the famously hirsute Lord Kitchener at the helm, were having difficulty recruiting the average working man into the Army, especially football fans, until a brave bunch from Heart of Midlothian volunteered. This is covered in Jeremy Paxman's documentary on the Great War (Part 1) and also here :-

http://www.edinburghs-war.ed.ac.uk/syst ... FC_WW1.pdf

Compare that to today's primadonna's !

There's a very good article somewhere on how the losses of WW1 affected crowds but I can't find it. I'm sure up to 1914 Charlton and Millwall were very well supported - top 5 in the country - but the war decimated that.

Women's football picked up during WWI, or so I remember from a history lecture, and apparently got decent crowds.

Have to admit I am 65 not 45 - must have posted 45 somewhere in a moment of madness.
I watched my first Liverpool match in the 50s and was hooked straightaway.

I think it would be a good idea to start all over again. It seems that Darbyand began the original list in May 2012 which has been more or less repeated by Sport Billy this week. I watched FEVER PITCH on TV last night (first time I had seen it) so the events of 1988-89 will be recalled by virtually everyone. It was 3 years before the Prem began in '92.
Was there ever a listing before 2012 ?
Let's see how many clubs can be represented, not just the big names who we agonise over every week. Please make sure you give your true age, no leap year ages
How about JUNIORS.born after 1976. MIDDLES. born after we won the World Cup in '66.
SENIORS, any time before that.

How's that for a start Tommymooney ? My own is WYCOMBE WANDERERS the year they won the Amateur Cup. Look it up !

I thought I would give this another run out following the Queen's big day yesterday. Which FISOers were around in 1952 ? reading through the thread paisley park and Sam D for sure. murf maybe, who else ? There must be one or two among the newer FISOers who may be viewers but are among the silent majority. This 'ghetto' outlook is very disappointing because there is a distinct lack of chat and response in words and sentences. Exclude the perennial RMT's usually featuring jimborogers. which seems to be at least 50% of the total content.
You have all had your first break and will be flooding the wave lengths in the next 48 hours to rectify poor starts (I will be too especially in the Tiny League)
Next week it's the CL and EL group stages first matches. Dare I mention GOALS GALORE ?

I'm too young to take my pension (as I keep saying I don't remember the 40s or 50s OR 60s!) but if things go to plan I won't be working any more.

If things don't go to plan then I'll be asking if you want fries with that in a few years

Had never heard of this before. Quick Wiki check reveals the staggering fact that

"The dead and injured were taken from the railway end terrace, with those who had perished lain along the touchline and covered in coats. A little under half an hour after leaving the pitch, the game was restarted, with a new sawdust lined touchline separating the players from the bodies."

I did go to Anfield in the 50's with my dad. He always took me in the main stand as I was probably 9 or 10 at the time and standing wasn't an option.
The boys pen was in the corner next to the Kop and alongside the usual crowd roars there was often some high shrieking chants of encouragement from the boys pen - it was weird hearing it for the first time.
We used to park quite near the ground as some friend or distant relative kept us a space outside their house by putting a ladder on 2 buckets in the road - might have been a window cleaner!
Alan A'Court, Billy Liddell, Louis Bimpson, Jimmy Melia and Gerry Byrne stick in my memory and Bob Paisley was around as well at the time maybe as a trainer.
