Damn, any other group and we would qualify, and mostly as group winners no less. And merely 11 pts difference between group winning and elimination.wiseowl65 wrote:

Unlucky Isalla definitely the hardest group to qualify from with just the odd point gained here and there making all the difference, just glad we come out on top and made it through.Isalla wrote:Damn, any other group and we would qualify, and mostly as group winners no less. Yeah, unlucky chaps. I didn't want to look this morning, i knew it was going to the wire. Proper group of death , for sure. Unlike the England football team , Moonlight Dribbler, and myself managed to get over the line with a gutsy performance...wiseowl65 wrote:Unlucky Isalla definitely the hardest group to qualify from with just the odd point gained here and there making all the difference, just glad we come out on top and made it through.Isalla wrote:Damn, any other group and we would qualify, and mostly as group winners no less. Quarter Final Preview - Match 50 and 52
Match 50
Cote d'Ivoire (24th Seed) v England (10th Seed)
I predicted Ivory Coast to qualify, which they did - so you can thank me any time for sorting that out for you. England on the other hand were predicted to finish bottom. They were 2nd, cost me a fortune that did.
I likened the Ivory Coast (Chandler and MAK) to a pair of wildcats in the group preview but they turned out to be more than teeth, claws and speed - racking up over 600 points between them. They were outscored though by their opponents here, England (Moonlightdribbler & The Dude Abides) who both indivdually scored over 320. Impressive stuff, they have to be backing themselves to go deep in this tournament.
Predicted result - England by 12 points.
Match 52
Costa Rica (17th Seed) v Greece (15th Seed)
I predicted these two to both finish 3rd and in their groups. They were 1st and 2nd. You both messed that up didn't you? who's laughing now th.... ah.
Big scorers Costa Rica (Wiseowl65 and Lamps92) go into this eliminator as massive favourites, laying waste to their pre tournament ranking of 17th and racking up almost 100 more points in the qualifiers than their opponents here. Will they still have what it takes now that their secret (lethal) weapons are out of the bag? I'm not going to burden them with my favouritism to get to the final just yet. Greece (Libero & Sir JG) will take heart from a gradual improvement over the rounds and may be assisted by the reduction in number of available hitherto unknown point scorers. Their solid yet unspectacular point scoring will need to pay off in every position to grind this one out in their favour.
Predicted result - Costa Rica by 45 points.

Round of 16 Preview - Match 53 and 55
Match 53:
Honduras (22nd) v Bosnia (16th)
Bosnia met expectations (well, mine anyway) by making the last 16 as Hayesag and Multiple Scorgasm cruised comfortably through Group F. They meet Group E winners Honduras, who swept past their first stage opposition, and I bet they did it a damn sight more cleanly than their real life counterparts!
Our Bosnian pair look up against it in both of the H2H games - Tenpinterry is sitting top of the FISO league with a ridiculous 370pts, and Fatbat is flapping nicely in about mid-table. It'll be a brave man/woman indeed that sees anything other than a Honduras win.
Taca says - Honduras are a shoe-in to go through
Match 55:
Nigeria (25th) v France (20th)
One of only two ties to bring up a duplicate of the matches in Brazil (as predicted by moi), the outcome might not be the same however.
Both qualified with ease, though it must be said that the eliminated teams in both Group E and F were woeful by any standard. Still, you can only beat what is put out in front of you, and Nigeria boast the 2nd best player in the competition so far, GingerMonkey.
Alongside Mick MacPaddywack (what a mouthful!), they block our Gallic duo's route to the last 8. Kris_fiso and Fingerpass haven't done anything spectacular up to now, are they about to kick into gear?
Taca says - With the French involved anything could happen...

Re: Taca's 2014 FIFA World Cup Pairs - GROUPS + R16 POSTED
Quarter Final Preview - Match 49 and 51
Match 49:
Cameroon (32nd) v Netherlands (8th)
The Dutch were the team that spoiled my predictions in the group phase, seeing off the Aussies including the FPL legend that is Spiderm4tt. The Cameroon come into the round of 16, belying their seeding with the fourth highest score of the round, but I was quite surprised to have the numbers put them as 32nd seed out of 32, and I suspect Spencer4 and jeffersdn will not be shocked to be moving on.
This one looks quite close to call and I expect it to be a high scoring thriller. I'm going to side with the Cameroon to continue giant killing. But only just
Mystery's prediction - Cameroon by 5
Match 51:
Chile (12th) v Croatia (18th)
I suggested that Chile might score explosively and they really did not disappoint - top scorers across the groups by the best part of 40 points. Croatia comfortably saw off Brazil and Mexico for the second spot in group A.
Stemania and from4corners look like they're waiting to take this tournament by the scruff of the neck, and I just can't see them being stopped quite yet. The Croatians have the ability and probably haven't hit top gear yet, but they'll need to be at their best to have a fighting chance.
Mystery's prediction - I backed them in the groups and I'm not stopping now. Chile by 30

It would appear that Golden Bear has been sent home along with Muntari and Boateng
I could go for the massive gamble with 5 Algerians but don't see that making up the 43 point deficit, unless they beat Germany of course!
