Premier League Preview (Gameweek 17)

Post by Totelfootball »

The back pages have been dominated by the Newcastle management debacle since the news broke on Monday afternoon. Unlikely candidate Alan Pardew got the gig as new boss, he was rewarded with the Geordie poisoned chalice on the back of successive sackings from Championship and First Division clubs. Chris Hughton's dismissal was universally condemned and Mike Ashley will no doubt continue in his attempts to destroy a once great football club. TotalFootball once again gives you the opportunity to hire and fire this weekend, let's see if we can earn you some cash into the bargain.

The big match this gameweek takes place unusually on Monday evening, the outcome of Manchester United's home clash with Arsenal may provide a new title favourite. An Arsenal win could open some daylight and send them 4 points clear, whilst a United victory could put them 2 points clear with a game in hand. United are set to be virtually full strength, missing only long-term absentees Valencia, Hargreaves and Michael Owen; Arsenal will be lacking the services of Fabregas, Diaby and Vermaelen. United remain unbeaten in the league, however they have been less than impressive at times; meanwhile Arsenal seem to have recovered their resolve of the early millenium and have impressed throughout the current campaign. The Gunners will provide United's sternest test yet and we believe they will shatter Fergie's dream of a season of invincibility, at 16/5 we should all lump on and guarantee the kids a few Christmas presents this year. Statistically Nasri, Arshavin and Chamakh are Arsenal's most valuable fantasy men, between them they have 18 goals and 14 assists in the league so far. In a bold move we are going to suggest including the trio in your fantasy team this weekend, it'll cost you 5 points but we are confident so you should be too.

Sunday's big Sky match is the London derby of Tottenham vs Chelsea at White Hart Lane. All the statistics suggest Spurs will roll Chelsea over, for example only one team has won away at Spurs in the last 19 Premier League matches, Spurs have won three and lost none of the last four home league matches against the Blues and Chelsea have taken just 5 points from the last 18 available during their worst run since September 2000. As we know football matches are not decided on statistics, Chelsea have missed Frank Lampard like Paul Gascoigne misses his driving licence, he may return on Sunday to boost Ancelotti's men. We have a feeling in our water that Chelsea are going to stop the rot this weekend, the reasons being that Tottenham's injury list is as long as Dion Dublin and Harry Redknapp's renowned attacking principles have reaped entertaining football at the cost of only one clean sheet this season. We feel that Chelsea's defence will return to their miserly ways and keep a clean sheet, Spurs are too easy to score against and Drogba will be too good to keep quiet. Back Chelsea at 13/8, we promise you won't go wrong; Cashley Cole and Didier Drogba are our suggestions for your fantasy team this weekend.

Another team that can return to winning ways this weekend is Aston Villa, they face West Brom at Villa Park in what should prove their easiest task for a while. Houllier's men haven't been as bad as recent results have suggested, whilst West Brom have staged a mini-revival of late. The Baggies have injury doubts over key men Odemwingie and Brunt, regardless of whether they are absent you simply cannot ignore Villa at 6/5. When Villa are on song, Stewart Downing and Ashley Young tend to be the star men, maybe you should add the duo to your fantasy side.

We foresee low scoring draws in the clashes of Fulham vs Sunderland and Wolves vs Birmingham City, we marginally favour the away side in each game so our fantasy defence lines up with Onuoha, Mensah, Ridgewell and Dann. A double on the pair of draws pays very nearly 10/1, a speculative punt can be had here. Joe Hart is top of the goalkeeping clean sheet chart so he should be between your fantasy sticks.

This weekend’s competition kicks off as always at 3pm on Saturday and concludes with Monday's aforementioned televised clash of United vs Arsenal. Warm yourself up with a fantasy bet at http://www.totelfootball.com/affiliate/fiso/index.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.
