100 Balls Up!

Post by Ducks Deluxe »

Not being as charitable as some of my friends on this site towards T20 cricket and the present regime of the ECB, it is with a mixture of disbelief and hilarity that I read of the plans to make the new City Based competition one of 100 balls....

More exciting, easier to follow, attract new audiences etc....

All details on the BBC site etc....

Outstanding work....   :?

What a bloody ridiculous idea. If they do want to change it, and no real problem with that, they need to come up with something a bit better than that, its just rubbish. The 10 over final over is going to make DL pretty difficult to work out. And bowling averages just completely obliterated

I would like to see 2 innings, whereby you score points for 1st Innings win and points for 2nd Innings win, and points for overall win. I daresay that wouldn't be that popular either, but its better than 15 overs with a 10 ball final over. Pathetic.

Ooozzie, that probably involved too much counting for those involved...

There is a really good film to be made out of this stuff....chasing money from the 'family ' audience and the beered up soccer fan audience...players bidding to become 100 ball specialists ...think I will work on a script!

Its not good is it, they are desperately trying to think of an idea to make it different from IPL and Big Bash. But one justification or reason for this shortening of the short game I have just seen is because the BBC who want to show live games (in the terrestrial allocation) is that they want to to be 3.5 hours max. Not sure if that is true or not though, just a tweet but it was from a cricket journalist, so could well be right. As it is going to prime time so moving Eastenders for Cricket is going to take some balls.

DD I think we have entered the Twilight Zone. I haven't been annoyed by anything so much since I don't know when.

Have been on Twitter this afternoon and it has gone down like a lead balloon. A mixture of incredulity and hilarity.

The more I talk/think about it the more I look forward to tomorrow's County Championship games. I'm 57 and with luck and a following wind I may just see CC cricket
and therefore Test cricket last my lifetime, but not by much.

I live in Cornwall now, but really hope to get up to Taunton this summer for a few days of proper cricket. I need to go for a lie down now!!

well said ooozzzie
I feel like this is a 20 days too late April Fools joke

Absolute farce to be honest... and who will prosper... all the test grounds... good luck to a small county ground like Kent or Derby or Leicester

I get the ECB want something to compete with the big bash, the IPL but radicalising cricket I mean come on a 10 ball over!!!!

We've been arguing there is too much cricket already and here we go, more cricket jammed into the schedule.
No wonder the longer format is dying out, you just cant fit it in.

If they have to do 100 balls, 20 x 5-ball or 10 x 10-ball “overs” would be a bit more sensible... statisticians will hate it, imagine what Bill Frindall would have thought had he lived to see it!

Cricket really doesn’t need bastardising any further though. The T20 format works, for the McDonald’s cricket that it is - enjoyable once in a while but not very satisfying (50-over is perhaps Nando’s, with the original form a decent three-course meal...) but once you start messing with the basic concepts like the over, it starts to become a novelty act.

Gosh that's a blast from the past...Daryl Tuffey...wow. Seriously having a bad day there :D :D We would've won too had our batsmen scored more runs and our bowlers took more wickets :D

There are some very strange things coming out of ECB HQ about this 100. Farcical.....if it wasn't already. England players will not be playing in the Competition. So that's another 12 to 15 players that they will have to drag from the counties. And you would expect that this being their star studded event, they would want the best players. But I suppose the England players are already committed in August. It gets worse. Players such as Root and Stokes will still be allocated a team. But they won't play and this will be for marketing purposes only. Its gets even worse.... Reason given for this is that the target audience (Mothers and Children) won't know who Root and Stokes are anyway. This has got to be a wind up, but its on the BBC website quoted https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/44044782

This mother and children thing has to be the most stupid thing I have ever heard of in my life! My wife has watch cricket all her life, her dad at Didsbury and me at Saddleworth,Micklehurst & Greenfield. She gets pissed but knows to watch the ball, and move and duck. My daughter 16 soon, has been coming all her life, but she and all the other girls didn’t get it. They were just playing, thank god she didn’t get hit. I will never forget hitting a four your old little girl Anna smash flush on the side of the head. I raced from the pitch, I was in tears her face had blood gushing out. Her dad Howard came out, he said “ Macca it’s not your fault son it’s our fault for being at the bar”! He had gone to the bar, Trish the toilet she was just playing with other kids. Luckily trish is a nurse and she clean her up they took her to hospital 10 Stiches. X-ray know damage she’s 23 now and has a kid. These are people who know the dangers at a cricket match. Mums & Kids with no idea about the game, somebody could be killed in the crowd so easily. Stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid idea! I personally would go after the ecb for everything. Reckless endangerment to life, thick bustards. Money, money, money no thought of safety mums and kids. Most wont pick the ball up,this is absolutely crazy. If there is any fiso member who has any clout with the HSE please step in. This is eff stupid, like running across a railway line, it’s not if it’s when a mum or kid gets killed or seriously injured. Think what it will do to the cricketer as well, I have seen Her all my life. It always gets brought up, thank goodness it could of been so much worse! ECB posh money grabbing pricks!
