I need a car for 4-6 weeks. Any ideas?
Is buying a car for £500 my best option?

Is it for every day use of our you going away?
Could you not borrow a car for that period?

Sounds obvious but have you costed the big hire car firms? Might do you a manager's special.
Or if you get on well with your boss ask for them to put it through your company, they'll probably get a better corporate deal.

I wouldn't buy a car for £500 unless you know who you are buying it off.
How about this for an idea ?

Of course, with the VED change, you'd have to tax for 6 months if you buy, and get a refund when you sell.

Re: Short term rent/lease
A rental is about £600
I'm thinking buy one for £500 and sell it for the same sort of price in a months time.
Would only really be using it to drive about 6-10 miles a day (car share can get me to work, mrs' could get me around at weekends).
Concern is, that I buy one and end up with something that doesn't start in the winter, or the radiator goes (or something else, you get the picture). Or if I can't flog it at the other end. Don't fancy the aggro of having an old banger leaking oil on my drive and/or taking a loss on it.
Anyone know how much you get for scrapping a car?
A couple of friends have offered to lend us a car; but both are too nice. I'm scared to borrow them (again at this time of year) in case something should happen. Realistically, if have to buy them a gift or give them cash of a decent amount for such a kind gesture. I'm thinking £100-£200? In which case, taking a loss on a banger is the sane result and comes with no guilt.

£100-£150 for a scrap car - seems to vary a bit.
Go old, unfashionable and Japanese. No-one wants a mitsubshi carisma, Toyota Carina. Dealers taking in p/ex and want shot?

Plenty of cheap honda civics' around too

Pre-2001 car with less than 1549cc engine will only be £80 for six months tax.
Check the battery is going to be up to winter starts.

Re: Short term rent/lease
Cheers Tommy, will take a butchers.
Murf: taxis I'm guessing will be £6-10 a day (but I wouldn't need one everyday). Not a bad option really £30 a week for 6 weeks.
That said, almost one week negotiated. So I might just bat this out.
Monday used my Mrs' car
Tuesday picked up by car share
Wednesday was in London so got a taxi to the train station
Thursday dug out the iron horse
Friday ?
But if I can bundle my way through the next 4 weeks, I'm thinking that's the better (easiest/laziest) option.
Ice makes the cycle interesting though
Rain will make the cycle less desirable.
A complete lack of fitness is another undesirable factor (although further justification).
