It's the future... But now

Post by Zimmerman »

On the streets of Gothenburg, there are 'driverless' volvos being test driven by Volvo engineers. They reckon by 2017 that they'll be expanded to some consumers and/or testing in the UK.

Once the thing of sci fi movies but now a very real possibility in the next 6 years these will be on the mass market.

It's amazing and inevitable at the same time.

Cars are already been inching towards it (parking aids... How literal are the Ford adverts I've seen)? I think Volvo have animal and cycle detection already installed. Many cars have distance things (when cruising on the motorway). That said, will be scary getting in a car and handing over that responsibility. Although as the lady just said on the radio... The computer/sensor monitoring capability can react much quicker than humans.

They did also say that they believe drivers should have the option to drive themselves.

I think humans shouldn't be forced to drive Volvos

I am staggered at the speed this is happening

It's like the drowning scene from 'I Robot', the robot has to protect human life and so when confronted with 2 choices it chooses the first it finds which happens to be an adult when the other choice is a child. The child ends up drowning because of a robotic choice

How does the car make that kind of decision ? I am sure it will be great when all is well on the roads but what about those times when it isn't ?

Scenarios
A dog runs in front of the car, do you
A/Brake and swerve to miss the dog, but risk hitting people on the pavement
B/Brake, but still hit the dog

How does the car decide ?

It's inevitable of course but very scary to think that in less than 10 years time people driving a car might look very strange (much like a person using a phone box today)

Good points Dennis but let me ask you this.

If you happened to take an I'll advised walk onto a busy road would you rather

A) have your life in the hands of the motorist driving the car coming towards you? or

B) have a computer controlled car decide your fate?

Thought so.

:D

Absolutely, but that scenario comes in the non-decision category. It's when it comes to making the decision where the 'grey area' is.

I am sure that all these things have been thought about though. The first manufacturer who's robot system makes the wrong decision is going to be dead meat in the market.

The other thing is the speed it will develop once the system is in place. How long before your kids say

"Ivor is taking me to the shops"
"Who's Ivor"
"My car Grandad, get with it" (Intelligent Vehicle On Road :D )

or

"You're not actually going to drive the car are you ? That's so embarrassing"

or

"I'm not getting in unless you let the car drive us there"

It could remove the danger of anyone drink driving which will be a bonus. Maybe cars will refuse to allow a driver to take over unless they pass a breathalyser test. Cars could be disabled if not insured as well.

It'll put bus drivers out of a job, bet fares won't go down though.

There were loads of them on the A12 this morning. Wish BMW would program theirs to use all the lanes and not just sit in the outside one.....

Dennis… and presumably a computer has the ability to calculate which scenario is most avoidable - i.e. a human might panic and try to swerve a dog, but end up hitting another car or a pedestrian. A computer just thinks &^%$ it, collateral damage, the dogs a gonner

and I am sure that there will be an (unpublished) heirarchy of disaster scenarios

pedestrian
car (depending on speed(s))
dog
