Following on from the previous post, the Racing Post will publish a mini-guide to the last 16 clubs in the Champions League on Tues 15 Feb.

And on Wed 16 Feb they're due to produce a bumper pull-out (oo-er) on the Cricket World Cup.

Thanks for that Sam, It's the wife's birthday tomorrow, I'll have to get her a copy as an early birthday pressie  .

Actually it's no joke, how am I supposed to sort out my Champions league teams when It's her birthday and all the family are coming over for pizzas and cake tomorrow evening. :?

Post doesn't deliver

Post by SamD »

Enjoy the day, Rick!

Tuesday's Racing Post includes about ten pages of articles and stats on the Champions League knockout stage (disappointing, imo, when compared to previous efforts). Frankly, the four pages on the same tournament in today's Guardian are more interesting.

Hope the 24-page Cricket World Cup pullout in the RP tomorrow (Wed) is more meaningful.

Pre-season previews: newspapers, magazines

Post by SamD »

Season 2011-12

The Big Kick-Off football preview pull-out is published with the Racing Post on Wed 3 Aug.

Last season, chief analyst Mark Langdon correctly forecast Birmingham would be relegated; price 13/2.
Mind you, he also said Arsenal were ready to win the Premier League title...

A useful source of predictions and stats, nonetheless.

Cheers Andy (& Sam), would have missed this.
Also, the 442 magazine season preview comes in at a huge 128 pages this year.

It must be a pain to have to have written these for the clubs with assumed transfer activity still to happen.

Fair point A74.

What you get:
9 page general PL read & opinion, 2 pages per PL club, 1/2 page per champ/L1/L2 club with a 2 page intro for each league, same for SPl.
6 pages each for La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga. Small mention for Ligue 1, Eredivisie, Primeira Liga.

I think if you're looking for an in depth prem review get out now and get the Racing Post. This is a good general read on the season ahead. Will cost you 495 pennies (& there's the magazine too), Racing Post 180 pennies.

I do miss the Racing Post preview. Here I am stuck in rural France, finding a newsagent is hard enough, and then to go in and ask for the Racing Post  'Nous avons Baked Beans' You lot are lucky chaps.

The text is fine but I've been ignoring the starting XI's. Norwich spent £2.5m on Vaughan - I think they'll play him.

I think Morison will play we paid 2.8 for him, yeah agree about the text, seems spot on but don't think people should take the starting XI's as accurate

I don't see how they can be accurate as so much is still up in the air at every club. Pre-season line ups are no guide yet as many players are late returning to training through injury or playing in Copa America etc then there is all the new signings and will they / won't they start - plus the usual issue of rotation.

I could probably have a good guess at the Liverpool one but I wouldn't put my house on me even getting 10 out of 11 right at the moment.

The Guardian squad sheets are usually quite good (as good as anybody's guess that is) so I'll check them out next week but I'll also be crossing my fingers the TFF servers function between 2 and 3 on saturday!

(Also for TFF I may enter a couple of teams 'late' as most of the big guns don't kick off at 3 and I can see other line ups whilst only missing 1 or 2 players from the 3pm kick offs - and maybe catching a bandwagon from those games. Worth a gamble....)

Pre-season previews: newspapers, magazines

Post by SamD »

Link to online version of Racing Post, with purchase option:
http://www.racingpost.com/news/horse-ra ... 73679/top/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This thread began several years ago partly in tribute to the Post's 72-page football season preview and its accompanying comprehensive player stats. It's not surprising that some raucous forumites are grudging about the content. But no one can expect to forecast 20 starting line-ups accurately, say, an hour before the season, let alone ten days ahead, as in this case. The 'Best XI' shown - note not a starting line-up prediction - is invaluable in that it offers those with an open mind some pointers in identifying potential.

To my mind, the Racing Post has been - and remains - the best-value preview in print.

On a similar note: the Guardian football guide is published with the newspaper on Mon 8 Aug.

I remember the Guardian's preview last year was quite entertaining too.
