Re: The grammar on FISO is quite outstanding
It does appear that usage is moving towards a lower case i.fourleafclover wrote:I blame my browser's spell checker. Lol. I was sure it was spelt but the checker objected, and I chose to go among with it as I was on the move.Billy Whiz wrote:Like email, online, net and web, the internet should be spelt (NB not spelled!) lower case. Some people might cap it up in the vague supposition that it's a trade mark, but it isn't, it's just a word. As for capping it up when it's used as a noun - only if your first language is German.fourleafclover wrote:That depends on whether it's used as a noun or an adjective.eastcentral1 wrote:By the way, Internet is indeed spelt with a capital I.
The Internet is spelled with a capital I.
Heavy internet traffic is spelled with a lower case i.
At least that's how it seems to be spelled.
As for capping it up, it wasn't done in the mistaken belief that it was a trade mark (which wouldn't in itself necessitate a capital I) - it was because it was/is thought to be a proper noun, defining one specific thing: the Internet. Like Africa.

OMG - Is 'Lol' now an accepted acronym that is pronounced that way and so no longer capitalised......fourleafclover wrote:I blame my browser's spell checker. Lol. I was sure it was spelt but the checker objected, and I chose to go among with it as I was on the move.

The BBC clearly doesn't have the same standards of grammar and punctuation as FISO. From the live feed following the appalling events in Christchurch:
ps - not making light of what happened at all
Reminds me of when I helped my Uncle jack off a horse.UK anti-Muslim hate group 'appalled'
TellMAMAUK, a UK-based group that supports victims of anti-Muslim hate, says it is "appalled" to hear about the "mass casualties" in Christchurch.

Indeed. Without a hyphen between Muslim and hate in the headline, it conveys the opposite of what was meant.

Re: The grammar on FISO is quite outstanding
So what about those guys who pretend to be grammatically challenged but are not? They annoy me. [lots of thing annoy me, I need help] "I know you know how to spell and punctuate but you don't want to be seen as a"... what? Geek? Smart cookie? Uncool grammar police dude? (I could understand that if one was still at school) Very weird behaviour and disingenuous at the same time especially as many on here are clearly geeky!

Must admit I enjoyed Alan Partridge correcting somebody the other night WRT the difference between acronyms, abbreviations and initialisations (which alas wrecks the best of all as TLA is actually TLI but nobody uses that - my second favourite TLA/TLI is Dilbert's The TTP Project)

Tbh lol
I am more disillusioned by the BBC employing fwits who pronounce three as free and keep using you when describing what a defender, forward etc should be doing: FFS a fair whack of the viewers\listeners are sat down scratching their balls.....
