Identifying a plant
I have something growing in a pot that looks grass like but I'm pretty sure is not grass. It might be the plant from last year growing again but not yet flowered but I don't know what it was anyway.
Is there a website where I can post a photo of the plant and it tells me what it is? Or do I have to wait until it flowers?

Ok
Is this just grass that I can rip out or is it a flower to be?

Re: Identifying a plant
I reckon that is Salix viminalis or Osier
We have a couple of big willows and this looks like its smaller European cousin

Re: Identifying a plant
You must of done - I think of no other explanation for why an unplanted plant might grow - I am rueing spending 2 weeks planting nettles, bind weed and ground elder in our back garden.

I will give it a fortnight and see what it does. If it flowers or looks like it might then all is good.
UKIP would never allow this. They have pledged to stop plants seeding where they are not wanted!

Re: Identifying a plant
If its what I think it is then its not going to flower - you might get a catkin if you are lucky.
Just to confirm this a tree we have here - I think you may be out of your depth.

I thought that - could be a nice space - get on to it Suprised.jpk wrote:Your garden is a right mess.
Also when you said "it looks like grass" did you mean to type "one thing I can be sure of is that it looks nothing at all like grass"
Its also a good phytoremediator.

Re: Identifying a plant
If you didn't plant it then it will not be a bulb stem so it could be self-seeded Willow, as suggested, Tarragon or another grass like plant that has sprouted from bird seed - was this pot near a bird feeder?

Re: Identifying a plant
Had an egg at the bottom of a planter once.
Was taking the soil out ready to replant a couple of years ago and there was a biggish round thing in there. Looked like an egg so I gave it a bit of a squeeze (I know! - Big red button syndrome).
Burst, confirming that not only was it an egg, but from the stink of the stuff that sprayed right into my face it had been there a while as well.
Question is - how the eff did it get there. I definitely didn't plant it. Does anything that you might get in the garden go around burying eggs??
(sorry - slight hijack but doesn't seem worth its own thread).

Its definitely not grass.
I don't believe it is Willow.
Possibly purple loosestrife or maybe rosebay willowherb.
A large untidy weed though floewers not unpleasant

Re: Identifying a plant
Well now you committed to growing it so we have an answer,
downside you will have to nurture and look after it - post updates and reports
On the upside if it is an Osier / Willow you can cut it down and make a cricket bat

That is more than likely. I had a packet of wild flower seeds I planted last year so maybe they have come up this year (albeit in a different pot)
