Elite League Hall of Fame

I'm trying to get together an Elite League Hall of Fame.

As you may know, the competition stretches back to the 2008-09 season. In that time user names have changed and members have left so it's hard to piece together a summary of the the league positions by fiso account name. It's doubly difficult because team names do not always contain the account name.

But, I'm getting there and just have 2011-12 to enter and then I can start the tidy up of the data.

Now, here's the question......

Who would you expect to be at the head of this hall of fame? (no, I know this may surprise you all, but it's not me! )

Two names stand out over the 7 seasons so I'll let you ponder on it while I get the table finalised.

Some notes on the data and method (and I'm open to comments here)

What's included?
Wherever possible, in the the case of people who have changed user name over the years I've tried to group them under their most recent name. (I don't know all the names though, many are unfamiliar)

2008-09 season didn't have a finalised table (just a final top 10 & an April update), so I've used the top 10 & bolted on the other places from the April update.

I've included everyone who has competed even if they have played just once.

Calculation method
In order to calculate an "average rank" I have made some adjustments to the actual ranks shown above.

(a) Some seasons have more teams than others so I've standarised the ranks to those of a 100 team league. I have taken 1st place in a 15 team league to be the same as 7th place in a 100 team league (1/15*100), 30th in an 84 team league is equivalent to 36th (30/84*100) in a 100 team league, etc. It looks about right to me but comments are welcome.

Note: the ranks shown above are the true ranks for each season. The tweaking only occurs in the calculation of an "average rank".

(b) In cases where a player doesn't compete they get a nominal rank of 50.5 i.e. right in the middle of a 100 team league.

(c) The Average Rank is then simply the average of these pro-rata rankings over 7 and 5 seasons.


Comments welcome, especially on these points:

Should I show everyone or only those with 2+ results?

Do I drop off players who haven't competed for a few years?

Do I even bother to show Mag Dog's ranking because we know he's always going to be around mid-table?

Do I use some form of weighting so that older results become less important?

1) Yes, I think two plus results needed.

2) No, I don't think you should, this is the HOF after all.

3) No need, mid table mediocrity

4) Don't think so, again this HOF, it is over the history of the competition for me.

Then again, I was thinking about this based on it being called HOF but if it is more of a ranking system, then perhaps more recent performance should rewarded and players who have not played for the last two years should be removed from the rankings.

His safety first, stats based approach, steering himself away from the naughty little Curtis Davies tempters, means he will always finish top quartile, but others with risks that come off will win it. He's the Nick Faldo of the Elite League.

I just need a couple of lucky Top 5's against his boring 25th every year, and I will be top of The Hall of Fame. Couple more bad seasons for Zimmerman, and we might need to see a Hall of Lame

Any further thoughts on the HOF questions?

My view is that as a Hall of Fame it looks reasonable and I might even keep in the people with one entry. Halls of Fame (or is it Hall of Fames???) include people past and present so I wouldn't want to lose anyone from the list (especially not pa102aw [John Morrison] ). We also get to keep STINKYGOLDFISH - FISO's very own Marmite ex-member.

I've used two ranking columns on the existing table and may develop the 2nd of these into a measure of "form" - maybe based over 5 years as at present but with some fancy weighting. The table though, being primarily a Hall of Fame, will be sorted on the first column which will take into account all seasons.

That's my current thinking anyway.

I have amended the 2nd rank to a form guide.

The form is measured over 5 seasons and, again, uses the amended rankings (pro-rata to 100 team leagues)

There is also a weighting: each previous season is worth 80% of the current. The weighting for the 5 seasons are 0.122, 0.152, 0.190, 0.238 and 0.297

(The weightings give Zimmerman a nice boost from 50th to 33rd.)
