"There Can Be Only One"


True there can be only one winner in any league, provided it has a suitable tie-break system of course. So "what makes this different then murf?" I hear you ask. Well, in this we will actually kill teams off like the supposed immortals in that there Highlander film (the decent first one with Christopher Lambert and James Bond in it - not the rubbish sequels) so at the end there, err, can be only one left.

So how do we turn a TFF league into the fantasy equivalent of Highlander?

After the International Break I think there are 32 scoring weeks to go (excluding Cup Final and international breaks) so in our Highlander league we will start with just 33 would-be-immortal entries (1 each), one of whom is killed off every week til there is only 1 left just like in Highlander. A lower entry means that, initially, killings will only occur every 2 scoring weeks.

RULES -
1. Entry limited to first 33 entries.
Entry will remain open til the kick off of the weekend commencing 15/9 (Friday evening 8pm) but you need to be in by the start proper of 12:30 on Saturday 9th September to be eligible for the first immunity.
2. 1 team each, any team you like.

3 - Initially (STAGE A) a team will be eliminated every two weeks then (STAGE B) one every week
The low scoring team will be tossed out of the league/cup never to be seen again - this means we will drop til we are down to 2 in the final Premiership week, our final. If I've got my number of weeks wrong I'll apply a fiddle at some stage to eliminate 0 or 2 in a week (announced in advance). Full details below. All reference to scores means the weekly score (except for daily scores in tie break as discussed below). Total scores mean nowt, ever.
4. I don't think we need any more rules except to say my word is law and I can invent a proper rule 4 if I have to.

STAGE A - Week 1 of Each Pair
In week 1 we are all trying to gain immunity from the week 2 evictions. The top half of the weekly scorers will be immune and get week 2 off. The bottom half will face elimination in week 2 (in weeks with odd numbers of teams then the middle team counts as being in the BOTTOM half). If teams straddle the mid-table split then they will all be considered as being in the half that they are mostly in . e.g. with 19 teams: 7 get over 50, 3 get exactly 50 and 9 get under 50 then there are 3 straddling the mid-point and they are mostly in the top half of the table so they get top half immunity.
Week 2 of Each Pair in STAGE A - and very week in Stage B
Quite simply the lowest score of all teams (other than those with immunity during Stage A) is eliminated/killed/evicted/kicked out. Game over.
TIE-BREAK - In the event of a tie for last
Stage A - The teams level in last (week 2 of pair) will be split by their week 1 score. If equal then as Stage B:
Stage B: The teams level in last will have a mini-replay on the next scoring DAY. That includes the FA Cup Final for our final. Lowest team on that day goes out. This will keep replaying til we get down to 1 (eg if 5 draw for last in a week and on the next scoring day 2 teams are level last the higher 3 breathe a sigh of relief whilst the lowest 2 re-replay on the next scoring day. During these replays the next week's action carries on simultaneously.

STAGE A will operate for 2 * (33 - No. of teams) weeks. e.g. if there are 20 entries then there will be 26 (2*(33-20)) weeks of Stage A and 6 weeks Stage B.

Formal FISO Superleague Caveat - If the Super League wins one of the League of League Prizes (1st - £1000, 2nd - £250, 3rd £100) then I will distribute that prize equally into my own back pocket and laugh at TFF for giving me the prize when there was only one team left in our league when you need 5 to be eligible.
Caveat 2 - When/if I get knocked out I think my team will have to stay showing in the league for admin reasons only. All scoring etc will ignore my team

I suspect ejecting teams out of the league will mean you won't be eligible for end of season prizes because you won't have enough teams for a five person average, but otherwise this is a great idea!
