Papiss Cisse

Post by Striker »

Does anyone know the details of Cisse backing down and agreeing to wear a Wonga shirt?

On the face ot it, it appears that he's simply been caught out by his own hypocrisy. That being found in a casino, his so called religious objection to interest has been shown to be a sham, or at best dual standards, and that he had to back down from an untenable position. Hopefully there is a little more to it than that.

They say that a compromise has been reached. I wonder if they will ever tell us what it is. Wouldn't be putting any money on it though.

saw an opening for an extra few quid I expect from his agent, he's worn money lender sponsors on his shirts before so it was total hypocrisy from the start. That photos probably not helped his cause at all, I would imagine rather than smack down him with a stick or totally caved in , the club in trying to be diplomatic will have increased his goals bonus or some such performance bonus as a middle ground.

we'll never know really.

Was it Virgin Money who sponsored Newcastle/the hypocrite before?

Do they not lend money?????

I'm sure the "compromise" is that he doesn't have to do any specific promotional work for them.

If only Newcastle would demonstrate that they had "balls" and were not like many of the inhabitants of the world of the Premiership morally bankrupt, and told both Cisse and Wonga "where to get off". Obviously wistful thinking.

From the mirror today
Papiss Cisse called a truce in his battle with Newcastle yesterday after the club called in an Imam to talk through his religious objections to wearing the Wonga logo.

The Senegalese striker has struck a compromise deal with the club after seeking spiritual guidance from leaders in his Muslim faith.

Cisse will now resume full training with Alan Pardew's squad , and will wear the name of the controversial money lender next season.

The 28-year-old was also offered religious counselling by Newcastle to work out how it was possible for him to square his "religious and ethical" objections to Wonga's 5,853 per cent payday loan interest rates, and continue his work for the club.

The club and the firm - anxious to be re-branded as a "digital finance company" - refused Cisse's request to wear an unbranded shirt , or to donate his No9 shirt front to a charity - during extensive talks over the last two weeks.

Some suspected one motive was to renegotiate his contract of force a big money move to Russian giants Anzhi Makhachkala, who are interested in his signature.

But Cisse and his representatives have always insisted he was happy at Newcastle and honoured to wear the famous No9 shirt, and the PFA and employment lawyers have all been involved in the talks aimed at keeping him on Tyneside.

Newcastle have yet to release a statement on the matter, treading carefully around the legal issues surrounding the case, towards Cisse and Wonga, but that could come today.
