The date can now be agreed

Chelsea v Man United on Tuesday March 1st Live on Sky

Chelsea v Birmingham (TBA) cannot be played on Sixth Round Day as Birmingham
are involved (although if they are drawn with Everton or Aston Villa in Round 6 they could still be free)

Cup games

Post by SamD »

With all four FA Cup quarter finals due to be televised, logic* suggests they'll be scheduled as follows, ie, even before the fifth round is completed:

Sat 12 March:
- Birmingham v Bolton
- Manchester United v Leyton Orient or Arsenal

Sun 13 March:
- Stoke v West Ham
- Manchester City or Aston Villa v Everton or Reading

* Man Utd's subsequent fixture is at home to Marseille in the Champions League on Tues 15th, hence Sunday is ruled out
Likewise, Man C could have a Europa Cup tie on Thurs 10th
Thus City, if they get past Villa, would play on Sunday
But if Villa go through, their matchday would also have been separated from Birmingham's to please the local cops

It's possible that:
- ITV will screen the Old Trafford game on Sat evening and the Stoke match around 2pm on Sunday
- with ESPN broadcasting the Birmingham cup-tie at 12:30 on Sat and the final one at 4:30 on Sunday

That suggests City could end up playing three games in six days in order to be ready for an FAC QF on Sun Mar 13th.

In that scenario, which has quite a few ifs and buts I'll admit, could City put their foot down and demand their Premier League game against Wigan on Sat 5th March be postponed?

  • Tues 1 March - Everton v Reading, live on ESPN
Wed 2 March - Manchester City v Aston Villa, live on ITV1
Wed 2 March - Arsenal v Leyton O, live on ESPN (replay)

Sat 16th Newcastle Man U
Sun 17th Man C Spurs
Sun 17th Arsenal Liverpool

All three are subject to either side being involved in FA Cup Semis

Sun 10th Blackpool Arsenal
Sun 24th Bolton Arsenal
Sun 1st Arsenal Man U

All three are subject to Arsenal or Man U not playing in Champions League on the
subsequent Tuesday

I think the TV companies have assumed Arsenal will not be !!!

2011-12 start

Post by SamD »

Hope to set up new thread next month outlining initial fixture grid for 2011-12 domestic season, incorporating key European club & international fixture dates (ie, as happened with this season's equivalent thread in March 2010).

In meantime, here's early news on the next campaign:
  • Sun 7 August 2011 - FA Community Shield, Wembley

Wed 10 August - Friendly: England v Holland, Wembley

Sat 13 August - Premier League kicks off

Why not host it abroad though, just this once? The Aviva in Dublin or Soccer City in Jo'burg seem to me to be fantastic alternatives.

As long as it is a huge failure and they can stop thinking about
the 39th game then all well and good

Most clubs like the tail end of pre-season to be based at home. To have to jet off to SA at the weekend then lose your stars for the internationals in midweek wouldn't be ideal preperation.

A little jolly to Dublin or Cardiff would be fine for them - the journey home might even aggravate the players' friendlyitis

August 2012 speculation

Post by SamD »

There seems to be some confusion above between Aug 2011 and Aug 2012 pre-season fixtures.

Isn't it improbable that a new midweek international friendly will be slotted in before the start of the Aug 2012 Premier League campaign, especially as the Olympics football tournament will have only just been competed?

Doh, that would be me....

With the Olympics so close to the start of the season I bet Chelsea are pleased Lampard announced he wants to play in the Olympics! He can go straight from the European Championships to the Olympics and then won't need a pre-season as he'll have have no time to eat pies on a beach in Dubai!

Championship Saturday finish

Post by SamD »

Code: Select all

        May
Sun 8 FLCh finishes
Contrary to the original schedule posted last June the final round of leagues matches in the Championship has changed.

Consultations with Sky and BBC TV execs this week have led to all 12 being brought forward to 12:45 Sat 7 May.

It looks like eight of the games that lunchtime could help decide the title, promotion, play-off and relegation places:

Notice how the press release was too gutless to admit to the real reason for the change. All it said was following discussion between the league, the clubs, Sky and the BBC. What it should have said was that Sky decided that they will be showing Man United vs Chelsea on the Sunday so everyone else has to fall into line. That situation has been known about all season though, so why did they have to wait until a week after the advance rail tickets have been released for that weekend to announce the change. I'll bet that there are supporters of most of the 12 away clubs who had already snapped up the cheapest tickets, tickets that can't be refunded and can only be changed to another day on payment of a £10 admin fee plus any difference in the price of tickets for the new date. And if you can't now go (perhaps you've got a wedding or something) then that's tough. The last day of the season is one that I would have thought was extremely unlikely to be changed because all the matches have to be played at the same time. So safe in that knowledge I've made other arrangements for the Saturday. Thanks a bunch, Sky.

Early start

Post by SamD »

The Scottish Premier League announced today that the 2011-12 season will kick off on Sat 23 July.

This earliest ever start means clubs entering European competition should be better prepared. It will also reduce the number of 'unpopular' midweek games during the winter months.

[However, a one-off compromise has been agreed to allow clubs to compete in friendly matches. This paves the way for Celtic to appear in the Dublin Super Cup over the weekend of 30 and 31 July alongside Manchester City, Inter Milan and an Irish League select.]

Cup spillover

Post by SamD »

A drawn FA Cup Quarter-Final next weekend could result in Premier League postponements; eg, this news from Arsenal:

"In the event that the game [against Man Utd] finishes in a draw, a replay will be staged at Emirates Stadium over the weekend of 18/19/20 March and our away PL fixture against WBA will be rearranged from Sat 19 March – new date TBC"

Likewise, Man Utd's league fixture against Bolton would also be postponed from Sat 19 March.

Full Cup QF schedule:
Birmingham v Bolton, 12.45 Sat 12 March - ESPN
Manchester United v Arsenal, 17.15 Sat 12 March - ITV
Stoke v West Ham, 14.00 Sun 13 March - ITV
Manchester City v Reading, 16.45 Sun 13 March - ESPN

We should find out which FAC semi gets played on which day after Thursday. If City go out of the Europa League, which is the more likely outcome, the Manchester tie will be played on the Saturday to avoid the London Marathon and Arsenal v Liverpool on the Sunday. http://www.teamtalk.com/manchester-city ... -millions-" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If City do somehow progress, that Sunday could be interesting in London! Noon start for the derby perhaps?
