Any predictions? I hope Little Miss Sunshine wins something. What a lovely movie. Volver was good too. I suppose its the year of the big studios to have thier turn for the big awards. Im not quite sure how Helen Mirrens thing is classed as a movie..

My picks and my predictions

Best picture - Tie for me - Babel or The Queen. Prediction - The Departed. They owe Scorsese, who will also get Best Director in a phony love-in.
Best Actor - Forrest Whitakker Prediction - probably Whittaker, although the great and long denied O'Toole might get it for his seven previous losses.
Best Actress - Helen Mirren. England's greatest asset. My Prediction - even the Acadamy isn't stupid enough to mess this one up.

Best Actor:Forest Whittaker
Best Supporting:Eddie Murphy
Best actress:Penélope Cruz in “Volver”
Best supporting actress:Rinko Kikuchi in “Babel”
Best Director: United 93” Paul Greengrass
Best Foreign:“Pan’s Labyrinth”

Im basing my predictions on studio rotation, rather than my personal opinion on merit...This year they will be handed out to the big studios.

Totally agreed, an excellent performance from Helen Mirren.

She looked totally stunning tonight and boy wasn't she sexy and beautiful when she was a bit younger. I still wouldn't mind.......

The good news - Helen Mirren and Forrest Whittaker. the bad news - The Departed. At least I picked all three. Don't get me wrong. I love Scorcese. I started with Mean Streets and loved Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Raging Bull and many others. This one wasn't worthy however.
The Oscars are kind of a joke, but winning one means everything to an acting career. As if Mirren would not be brilliant without one.
The usual, boring, bloated ceremony with very few moments of wit or intelligence.

What a load of tosh.

I hear the bookies have Mike Yarwood and Ronnie Ancona down as the early favourites for next year's awards.

No, it's definitely worth a watch. It's a good film, spoiled for me by the way Nicholson hams it up - he's simply not believable as an evil, twisted crime boss. Di Caprio, however, is as always excellent, and he's ably assisted by Wahlberg and, I suppose, Damon (who I think is rubbish).

I thought The Departed was a fantastic movie, definitely worth renting and a worthy winner imo.

Nah, first thing I've disagreed with you on for a while Robbie. It was a good movie, spoiled by Nicholson, and I think it won more out of a sentimental vote for Scorcese than as a movie.

But which film did you prefer? Personally I enjoyed that movie more than the others that were nominated. Just my opinion, but if I was voting I'd have gone for the Departed. Much more my cup of tea than things like The Queen. Although, having said that I'm certainly no film buff and if it was up to me Dumb and Dumber, Back to the Future, Indiana Jones, American Pie, and The Wedding Crashers would've all won Oscars! :D

   One of THE greatest lines/moments of any movie ever made in the history of the universe.

Followed by (in the Dog Van as they getaway after making Seabass pay for the meal) :

Harry : "That was great Lloyd, how did you think of that?"
Lloyd : "Saw it in a movie once"
Harry : "So what happened? Did they just get away with it scott free"
Lloyd : "No, in the movie they cought up with them about a half mile down the road and slit their throats...lol.....it was a good one"!!

Pure genius!!

Lloyd (slamming door and falling to the ground): "I got robbed by a little old lady....and I didn't even see it coming".

No, I enjoyed it immensely. I don't watch as much world cinema stuff since moving out of the smoke so not sure what the competition was.

Watched the departed last night. Started really well. was a bit disappointed with the end. Thought it was OK but wasn't exactly blown away myself :?
