Hi,

Does anyone else feel the need to upvote or + posts in on this forum?
As a rare poster I frequently just slide through the forums reading the newest threads without saying a word.
For rubbish post I would love to have the ability to downvote / dislike / thumbs down the post to show my despise.
- Every now and then you come across brilliant comedy one liner replies or quality advice for fantasy football. In this case I would love to give the poster credit silently without replying.

Don't know much about the forum software, but a quick search led me to a mod right away http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopi ... &t=2095240

Please note that I am not talking about Facebook or other social media integration features.

Is this anything?

If you allowed everyone to vote, too many would abuse this and it would lead to yet more disagreements. You'd have to only allow certain posters this ability and in doing that, perhaps the whole point would be lost.

How would you abuse it? you only have 1 vote per post. Apart from spambots it seems to work ok for the rest of the Internet.
Yes, selectively giving only some users this ability would be absurd.

I'm thinking, this forum is populated by football fans, who are naturally pro and con various teams, Man Utd/Liverpool, Arsenal/ Spurs etc.

Within a short amount of time, I bet you'd get a situation where all 'x' fans voted for 'x' fans' posts etc and voted against 'y' etc.

This place is mainly posting opinions, it's not like a DIY forum where people are giving practical help. Though I do think that generally it's a decent idea, and have seen it working happily in other forums, I doubt it would work to anyone's actual benefit here.

You have a point. Did not think of that as I only ever read the FF and player discussions, and have no idea of who supports who.

It does seem to work elsewhere. I guess it depends how it is 'reported'.

Ideally it should only be introduced in things like the FF forums and not things like Football Talk or Politics.

Take one look at moneysavingexpert - people with thousands of "thanked"s to their names - there's a cottage industry in getting appreciated over there.

Not for me, "thanks".

Then people would complain about the number of upvotes on Bosingwa will play, when he doesn't :?

And I don't do cottaging :?

FISO is clearly communist...

Yeah, clearly a bad idea, but I've thought for a long time that there should be some sort of feature to nominate posts for some sort of 'post of the month' award. Don't know whether phpBB has such an add-on feature though.

Jeebus, would a simple 'thumbs up' really cause such problems? Surely the novelty would pass, provided people didn't get silly over the votes.

Speaking of being silly - why would you limit the ability to vote? Who are the best people on this forum? :?

I think you've kind of demonstrated the problems of any sort of vote system in a forums based largely on subjective opinion.

I think giving, for example, snout positive scores for his injury updates would demonstrate he is a credible poster so newbies would see he is trustworthy.

Similarly if a certain poster just keeps posting his opinion dressed as fact "X will play [cos I don't believe his manager]" "Y won't play cos he is shite" then we could give him a low rating and newbies would know to be suspicious.

It's a very slippery slope I think. It might put people off voicing an opinion for fear of getting a load of bad votes. That's why I think you'd have to restrict the ability to vote, which as I said before is probably not perfect.

I quite like this in theory but would like to see how it works in practise.

Is there any possibility of giving this a trial run :?: ...

In general it would seem to be a good idea, it would remove both a lot of "thank you" posts and also those deriding certain posters, shortening threads to discussion only and leaving others at a single post that would disappear from the latest posts page very quickly.

Both a good and a bad thing, seeing some posts never developing into threads filled with arguments would be great, seeing good useful posts just disappear without comment and therefore being missed by loads of people would be bad.

I agree with S4 that it would be abused in places but as it would just be a number or percentage then perhaps not much harm can be done? Some posters may well be targeted by a small group that will happily waste their time by giving a thumbs down (or whatever) and others could well have a following that will vote positively en bloc too. It won't take very long for this to be noticed, highlighted and votes for/ against particular posters to be predictable and thus ignored by the majority and maybe a large number of counter votes being prompted.

If possible then worth a trial for a few months.

I have never had a problem with '+1' and the like, it is meant to be an ongoing conversation after all.

Shirley the advantage is for newer posters to see who spouts shite along the lines of Torres will start and score; and they won't understand the bloc voting stuff.

No harm in a trial, though.

I think this issue has been raised indirectly in the past, think the debate was on "post karma".

who-would-you-vote-for-as-the-most-helpfull-mod-or-fiso-user-t76325.html?hilit=post%20karma

Look at the last post on this thread from Karrde in particular..

I was also add a potential problem would be the work needed to add this feature to the forum :?:

Which is why I say a 'post of the month' nomination system might be a better way go, just for the simplicity of it. Couldn't you just set-up a second 'report' system, but for nominating instead? Sorry if this is so obviously not possible for a reason beyond my rather limited knowledge of phpBB.

Sorry Tac, quickly scanned the thread before I responded and missed your idea. Have to say a post of the month or week or (in a nice way) a duff post of the week would be a fun addition.

I think it'd have to be a monthly thing for the reason that you'd need a week each month to allow for the poll to get a conclusive result (not to mention that a shortlist would need to be decided on by the mods/admin). Re. a 'duff' award - I was of the mind that good and bad posts would be up for this award, such as in a bad post being incredible/hilarious in its badness.

Debatably, yes.

It ain't what it was in the old days  and if the moderators won't rid us of rubbish posters then maybe a rating system will show them up to newcomers.

And there are too many Wayne Bridges around here also  On a serious note, my point is that I'd rather have a system (if we must) that is either intrinsically positive and knowingly mocks hilarious examples of stupidity.
