Debatably, yes.

It ain't what it was in the old days  and if the moderators won't rid us of rubbish posters then maybe a rating system will show them up to newcomers.

I echo the sheep! There are atleast 3 posters who bring the forum down aka Rubbish Posters.

Our Achilles' heel, if you like. The more we debate this, the more I'm sure a post of the month award is a go-er - an inventer always loves his own creation. I mean, how does a post like this not deserve recognition  - post1894273.html#p1894273

There are a lot more than 3 Arsenal and Liverpool fans on FISO, fortunately most of them are contained in a couple of circular MTIBTYT threads for the bulk of their posts :)

Posters who belong in a clique and enjoy school yard esque bullying would enjoy this device, sadly for the rest of us I feel it serves no purpose.

Also, if I may add, members have the option to add fellow members as foes thus reducing the comments/topics from posters they do not want to see but hey Blah blah blah what do I know about anything (Although it does seem that certain members claim to have made certain posters foes but don't actually go through with said threat but hey again blah blah blah what do I know about anything)

Foeing (new word?) doesn't achieve anything except temporary peace from complete fools. Some potential foes occasionally post useful FF info or inadvertently start interesting threads too.

It doesn't provide guidance to newbies and can even encourage numptiness as less people are seen to challenge it.

It also doesn't work on Tapatalk or quotes.

Achiles - what would like to do if you could? Have to agree that anything negative isn't a good idea.

Simple really, if you don't like a poster for whatever reason then follow the rules of the forum.
Either add him as a foe or don't get involve in silly flaming battles on topics.
I can't see the point of adding negative or positive points to a poster it will be abused on either club loyalties or due to one poster or groups of posters not getting on with another.

One person on here (no names mentioned) regularly follows me around and add's negative/insulting posts yet also claims to have added me as a foe (go figure).

Really? users go around stalking each other like this? :D

There is a little too much emphasis on the users being stalked and victimized here. I just want the ability to give credit or view the popularity on a post by post basis.
If good and valid contributions are credited, then maybe it would encourage other users to raise the quality of their content.
One challenge is of course that it becomes harder for people to post controversial opinions without getting shot down immediately.

I support the idea of a positive-only voting system and it would maybe remove much of the drama predicted in this thread.

But, as has been said, the main problem with any voting system, even a positive-only one, is that cliques and such like will become ever more prevalent. Much better, if we have to, to only have an ad hoc approach, à la monthly awards. I'd rather have something that we can debate and have a laugh about.

If FISO was to do this then positive only voting would be the way to go. Maybe not show how many votes a poster has until they reach a set number. The hard thing for newbies is knowing why someone has a good positive votes. ie a poster may be voted high in non sports threads but not get votes in sports related threads.

Or just a monthly award for topic of the month.
Chosen by the mods perhaps as a unbiased selection commitee.

Once 5 topics are chosen links could be provided and we could vote on them.
The winner of the topic of month will receive a gold star which he may display on his profile or by his user name.
Up to a maximum of 5 stars can be awarded however stars can also be taken away if the member is found to have broken FISO rules or acted against the rules of the FISO regulations.

Nothing simpler more effective than the +1, I agree, good point etc (as tac mentioned earlier), especially if it happens from respected posters. Maybe a similar contribution from older members who seem dissalusioned with the quality of posting on here could help too :)

I also look at the view count when deciding to look at posts.

Downvoting this thread

If I feel a post or thread deserves thanks, I'll use the option of actually posting a word of thanks in reply. Voting systems are way too easy to abuse with multiple accounts or collusion, whereas a simple word of appreciation goes a lot further than a "+1".

Bad idea to many daft Gooners on here who are far to sensitive to the faults of there own team on here for sensible voting.

Don't know much about the forum software, but a quick search led me to a mod right away http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopi ... &t=2095240

This phpbb modification is in the list of 'Modifications Under Development' rather than those 'Mods Released' which can be found at http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewforum.php?f=69.

Plus at the end of the Mod Topic it says:
'This topic has been marked as [ABD] - Abandoned as the mod author has not been active recently.'
so it's not one we can consider using ourselves.

Even with a Mod that's been officially released it does cause extra costs when updating the forum software to the current version of phpbb and can conflict with other Mods etc on the forum. For example, we recently had a bug on the forum caused by a phpbb mod interacting with the Tapatalk add-on which not only caused tapatalk functionality to disappear but also I think was responsible for causing some invisible posts on the forum which was a problem for lots of people. As another example, we did start to implement a 'karma' phpbb Mod (aimed at recognising good/bad posters) but it became apparent the Mod code wasn't being kept fully up to date which could have led to security flaws/issues etc so I asked the developer to abandon that work.

Ideally the released Mod would subsequently be incorporated within the actual phpbb forum software release as some Mods have been done over the years meaning the code is not only kept up to date but is compatible with the rest of the forum software.

This is key for me. We're such a multifaceted forum that no one will know if a user has been upvoted for tips on gardening, poker or their inside knowledge of QPR.
