Is there going to be a 1K thread as well? I ventured into the gym for the first time in a long time yesterday and did a 1K stint, only at 7 admittedly but then I have done nothing bar swimming for a couple of years. Would like to see where I sit - think it was 3.53 I did it in.

el_pappje - 3.53 (Resistance 7)
tcf - 2.32 (Resistance 10)

All in the power and back. and lungs.

p.s. you'll look very silly going at that speed in the gym, so try go when no ones there.

tcf, I think that is your split time for 500m.

2.32 for 1000m is the equivalent of sub 5.10 for 2K - World record pace is about 5.45

split time for 500m? Over 5minutes for 1k, it was a much much faster speed row than that.. but who knows?

Of course I can only believe what it showed before me, but had I gone on to the 2k I'd probably not have been walking out of the gym that same day.

This was power pulling and it done me over, but if it's wrong then I wasted the effort. 13m per second.

I'll give it another go but step it down a notch as this is sickening stuff, I felt like i'd sprinted for 2 and a half minutes.

By the way I've gave resistance 7 a pop yesterday morning, but found myself rowing further p/m on 10 at not much more strain. Perhaps it's just technique, I'm not sure.

el_papp your time, was this out of breathe stuff or a shade over? out of 10 how much did you give it :?:

It was first time back in the gym proper for well over a year, prob more like 18 months. Done mainly swimming and a lunchtime walk in the intervening period! I left a good deal in the tank, this was about doing a little bit of exercise to start getting back into shape. I did actually feel like the level needed turned up to optimise my effort - I've got pretty good technique.

I could tell how unfit I am as it wasn't a stroll with no sweat, but equally I wasn't out on my feet. Next week I'll put it up to 10 and see how I go.

Use your arms in pulling it hard, and keep your back straight. If you're not feeling sick after then you haven't gone fast enough.

Will add your time when posted. Then once everyones posted times for all rowing challenges, we'll add them together for a longer race distance challenge and see who's leading. 8-)

Congratulations on breaking the 1000m World Record, tcf.

Next step is Rob Waddell's 2000m World Record of 5:36.6.

Are you coming down here for the World Rowing Championships at (nearby) Lake Karapiro later this year? If not, look forward to watching you perform at the London Olympics!

I've never rowed in water myself, but I'm not liking the look of that 2k time, I felt like passing out from 1k, keeping that speed up almost throughout double time I'd probably not be alive to see my own record.

I'll see what I can do for the Olympics, but I've had a few beers of late, not helping the cause. :( 8-)

I really want to recreate the same team (or shave 2 secs off) but the feeling after was worse than good.

that's not the time in water. I think what AK is saying is that the WR on a concept 2 for 1000m is 2.39, so either you just went 7 seconds under the world record that's stood since 2003 or that display is wrong.

Now I'm not a betting man but....

Although if you look at the intensity line, that would suggest 2.57 for 1000 going by that calculation.

But if that was the case, then 2.32 wouldn't be a 500m split - that would be showing 1.28ish.

Am going to attempt my debut Level 10 tomorrow.

Of course I'm not going to say thats 100% my time, theres most probably something up with it, but I can 100% say I hit it hard and I probably looked a right tool to anyone looking.

It's not the split times, but maybe theres something up. It was on level 10, my heart rate probably reached an all time high due to this.

Next time I want to burn 100 calories I'll just run a gradient kilometre, alot easier.

Right theres definitely something up with what I'm doing, or the machine has been tinkered with.. I've just clocked a post 2000m in 5.23. Burning 239 calories. :D

Someone help me figure this one out please, there's no way I've just beat Rob's world record breaking time by over 10 seconds, all I do is pull it very hard to get the pace going..

I'm sure it's not my split time as that'd be way too slow, but there's something up.

I went back today and clocked a Level 10 1000m in 3.42.1

Only rated 25 strokes/minute - I like to try and keep a composed pace - but my arms & legs were burning afterwards  Heart felt fine though! I am such a weak, unfit dog

I think my plan will be to do a bit of fat burn & cardio work before taking on more challenges.

I'd maybe ask at the gym - tell them that either the machine is duff or they've got a WR contender on their hands and aren't they going to offer you free membership to tilt at the title

I'll give it a shot.. Might aswell clock me a 15minute 5miler (and doubt that I'll live to tell the tale) before they fix it, or give me free membership and a medal or 3. 8-)

but for now, no more cardio.. sickening after all that.

I use 2 gyms, but for the 1ks I've used 2 rowing machines next to each other. I'll try it at the other gym when I have the nrg. 8-)

I find the machines a bit of a rip. You can gluide/cruise a lot more, if you go slower but really pull hard and reach back, meaning say 20 spm, not as rewarding exercise but you can increase your projected time for 30 mins by 1500 meters. So even though you can be bombing away on the machine, you can get someone next to you effortlessly beating your time because they are letting the machine 'do' more of the work....

Yer old da may set foot on a concept2 for the first time this year (I think) tomorrow. If I can rattle out a 3.30 I'll be happy enough. :?
