The Race
The penultimate week of Leg 2 has the first few boats sailing into Wellington - however the Chatham Islands and the southern tip of New Zealand's North Island have claimed some victims which is sure to disappoint a number of skippers who were set to claim podium positions until misfortune struck.

Standings
Eager to be first across the finish line Tevez/Adebayor only managed to sail
Special Riders onto the rocks - a mistake that both
The Bare Bones and
Förbrytarbeteende IK took advantage of by completing the Leg in 1st and 2nd positions. Congratulations to skippers
Five long bones and
Not our Donna and their crews who can now take a weeks break before restarting again in GW18.
Special Riders isn't out of it yet and now only has 99Nms left to try and secure 3rd spot - ahead of
grob's gobsmackers who is the only other boat in this pool whose target is the finish line, although he may have been able to reach it this week had he not stopped sailing with 4 tacks still to go.
A Smoked Cheese Pig comes next - having been blown northwards in mid-week - but now back on track.
Sligos Donkeys are running in 6th but really need to get over whatever physiological problem they have crossing the waylines. Last week was wayline 4 and this week it's
wayline 5 and they are gradually being caught by the rest of the fleet - the nearest of which are
Doomsday,
No-Eye Deer and
Bondi Stars, the latter coming in from the north so the Chatham Islands may still come into play for him.
Further back still sees
Erins Own, who decided against penguin spotting after all,
SMELLY CRAZY SKUNKS and
Trigger Happy, who lost Ireland overboard at the end of tack 8. While both
Erins Own and
SMELLY CRAZY SKUNKS tried to help, without having to alter course too much, neither made it, although
Erins Own was only short by some 10-15Nms. The result was that
Trigger Happy spent 2 tacks rescuing Ireland from the freezing waters.
At the back
Team DDG 2658 and
Proverbs Three Five are still trying to come to terms with the difficulties the Southern Ocean presents and it's highly unlikely that either will reach Wellington before the claxon sounds the end of the leg next week.

Standings
Close racing at the front saw 4 boats make it across the finish line before the end of the week. First to do this was
Cakes North End FC on tack 5 who was duly awarded the 14 points available. Congrations go to
Jonathan Cakes for his great seamanship on this leg.
Tack 8 saw both
luckysevens.co.uk and
The Red Ranger cross the line - but it's
luckysevens.co.uk who takes the 13 points by virtue of using less of his tack to achieve the goal. The final boat to be getting a week off is
Trumpton Hotspur who finished 2 tacks later. Well done to all those skippers who can now take their time to enjoy the sites of the New Zealand capital.
Smoke City,
Getafe King Life and
Ardley Athletic are still out at sea but now have their sights firmly set on the finish line although
Getafe King Life's crew could also be relaxing in Wellington if they too hadn't stopped racing at the end of tack 11.
Big problems for
Mongoose Budvar King who ran aground on the Chatham Islands at the end of tack 9. On restarting he spent a couple of tacks treading water and promptly ran aground again. To the amusement of the local population crewman Miller managed to fall overboard while the boat was beached

- a blessing in disguise as no further penalty will be applied as the boat was not racing at the time - although skipper
mongoose didn't look too happy with the situation.
Whiz Bang Wallop is approaching waypoint 5 with
Nelsons Admirals not far behind - however the latter could well have been further up the field had crewman Yakubu not lost concentration when showing off a new trick he'd learnt with his hat or crewman Green not lost all sense of direction.
Some distance back are
The 9 Commandments,
Athletic Philbao and leg 1 winner
FISO.co.uk who are neck-and-neck, with
Roman Villa bringing up the rear.

Standings
After a 3rd place finish in leg1
Halfway Up Virginia improved by 2 places to be first to finish this leg on tack 9.
Slarty is obviously one of the skippers in form.
Clearly No Way and
Busk When It's Xmas take 2nd and 3rd, both on tack 11, with
Clearly No Way taking the 13 points.
Well done
Slarty,
CanaryYellow and
flyingkillercob for three great performances.
Crazy Canucks looks set for 4th, unless disaster strikes, as he comes in from the north, with
IblameFlyman and
Honeyballs in hot pursuit. Unfortunately for the only female skipper in the fleet the first tack of next week will be backtracking to go to the assistance of
Sultan Of Barnet FC who lost crewman Miller overboard on the last tack of the week. She will be joined in this rescue mission by
Y'all be bad who at least will be staying roughly on course in doing so.
This is fortunate as
Y'all be bad has had a difficult week and really needs to recoup the massive amount of ground he has lose. Tack 7 saw the Ronaldo/Bentley watch run the boat on to the rocks of the Chatham Islands - and on restarting crewman Cole took them straight back to land again. Restarting a second time, from waypoint 5, little headway was made on the three remaining tacks.
Apathetic Thistle comes next followed by
Cow Tipping Dwarfs and then
Luke's Giants who is one boat who is probably hoping for bad navigation at the beginning of next week as there is land, those Chatham Islands again, in a near direct path to his current target waypoint - waypoint 5.
The final 3 boats in this pool,
Lythgoe's Disciples,
Kazma United and
The Goats bring up the rear but compared to other pools' tailenders are doing fairly well - but unfortunately look set to only pick up consolation points. Still only one more week before the boats get a respray - purple being a colour
Lythgoe's Disciples feels may be responsible for his poor showing in this leg after being a winner in the previous one.

Standings
Bullys Special Prize is so far the only boat to have finished from this pool. Crossing the line on tack 9 sees them pick up 14 hard won points. Congratulations to
Digsby and his crew.
Had
Robots in Disguise not run aground on the same tack it would have been a close finish - but as it is
Robots in Disguise is now battling for 3rd/4th with
Easy Beesy - with
CA Vellus Arsefield seeming assured of 2nd being only 39Nms short at the end of the week - although skipper
beglee had trouble reinvigorating his crew once misfortune had struck as they only progressed 40Nm in the last 4 tacks after their restart. Will he be able to pull his crew back together next week?
After giving the Chatham Islands a wide berth by going to the north of them
The Wyld Ones are taking risks but if all goes well a top 5 placing is on the cards - and is the last of the boats heading for port.
The King Of Kings lies in 6th having recovered from losing crewman Ireland overboard at the end of tack 8. His position was helped by both
The Doughboys and
Richt's Biscuit's responding to his SOS and reaching him within one tack and therefore saving him from spending too long with his grappling hook in hand.
Richt's Biscuit's and
The Doughboys, along with
Blue Scorpions FC, are a short distance behind him now but the latter two boats could well be on course for the Islands that have caused other boats so much anguish this week. Only time will tell whether they pass them unscathed.
The remaining boats,
Naked Pirates,
The Drogs,
Lokomotiv Croydon,
1086 and
Book 'Em Delgetti bring up the rear and while they are all making steady progress it will probably only be enough for the minor points.
The Southern Ocean has severely tested all the crews and 1 weeks racing now remains before the leg 2 is concluded.
