Gameweek 12 Progress.
(Final Week of Leg 1)

Same download options as last time - a slim version and a fatter one (with models). Network version coming soon - hopefully for the draw for Leg2 later in the week)

Simple

With Models

(Save to Disk and load from there)

Added this week. If you click the on each Pool a rudimentary status table comes up (I'll tart it up later) - showing the boats and their current positions - be that what GW/Tack they finished on (+ % used) or their current Target Waypoint and distance from it. This will give race positions during a leg.

The Race

Pool A
Screenshot 1 - Screenshot 2 - Results Table

With all to play for in this Pool Tack 7 saw FISO.co.uk be the first across the finish line and pick up the 14 points on offer. As a last minute addition to the fleet FISO.co.uk has had a incident free leg and that steady sailing has reaped the rewards. Congratulations go to skipper admin.

A Smoked Cheese Pig crossed the line the very next tack for 13 points - but skipper karrde admitted that it was a close run thing with navigator Ronaldo running close to land.

Busk When It's Xmas was next to finish with Naked Pirates following a few tacks later to be the last of the boats to hear the claxon - all the other boats being informed via radio that the Leg was over and their final positions being logged for the remaining points to be awarded.

Easy Beesy was within 70Nm of the finish being closely followed by Special Riders whose seemingly random navigation at the end of the previous week continued at the start of this one and resulted in a great deal of lost ground at this crucial stage.

Disaster for The Goats however. Very much in contention at the beginning of week a bad watch by crewman Laursen sewed the seed for what was later to become a double run-aground on the Brazilian coast. After restarting from waypoint 7 time just ran out and The Goats were eventually placed in 7th - earning 8 points - just ahead of Sultan Of Barnet FC

A commendable effort by Luke's Giants, after the nightmare that was GW9, to even be in South Atlantic. He takes 9th - followed by the remainder of the field - with the last 2 boats being The Doughboys and Clearly No Way

Pool B
Screenshot 1 - Screenshot 2 - Results Table

Y'all be bad wasted no time in claiming his victory by crossing the line on his 2nd tack of the week. Congrations to skipper Krispdafunk whose trouble free leg and careful sailing have been rewarded with 14 points.

Also finishing before time was called on the Leg were 1086, Athletic Philbao, Sligos Donkeys, Kazma United, Crazy Canucks and Cakes North End FC - although there was no drama report - just a dash for the line.

Just short of the line were luckysevens.co.uk and IblameFlyman who were both reported disappointed to be so close - however the points they earned were not affected.

The Bare Bones, Trumpton Hotspur, Mongoose Budvar King were racing in fairly close formation at the end followed by Bullys Special Prize a short distance behind.

Bringing up the rear was Trigger Happy who just couldn't get his rigging set up as he wanted during the leg.

Pool C
Screenshot 1 - Screenshot 2 - Results Table

With the crews of both The Drogs and Erins Own already relaxing in the bars of the Argentine capital the race was still on for 3rd position downwards in what has been the closest pool of the Leg.

Robots in Disguise had the initial advantage over Halfway Up Virginia but the watches of Laursen and Garrido established momentum for the latter to steal 3rd place. It was very close, with both boats finishing on tack 4, however Halfway Up Virginia only required 7% of his final tack to cross the line - as opposed to Robots in Disguise who needed 26%. Great racing.

Next was Smoke City followed by Bondi Stars and Cow Tipping Dwarfs who had a little battle between them on tack 9 with Bondi Stars eventually prevailing.

Roman Villa and Nelson Admirals were the last to complete the leg in the allotted time with the remaining boats receiving the signal to stop racing and proceed to port.

Book 'Em Delgetti and Lokomotiv Croydon were in sight of the finish when the call went out with Förbrytarbeteende IK not far behind them.

Erratic navigation saw grob's gobsmackers and Honeyballs bring up the rear of this pool but with positions that would have given them a few more points had they been drawn in different groups.

Pool D
Screenshot 1 - Screenshot 2 - Results Table

With Lythgoe's Disciples safely in port, (undergoing scrutiny of his keel and sails by the Race Committee), the race was on for second place.

Neck and neck racing from The Red Ranger and Getafe King Life for the 13 points. Laursen and Lescott's watches gave The Red Ranger the edge as he pipped Getafe King Life to the post on tack 4 - using only 44% of the available points (compared to 97%).

SMELLY CRAZY SKUNKS came in a couple of tacks later to bag 4th and 11 points while Doomsday and the 2 Singaporean boats of Blue Scorpions FC and The 9 Commandments followed close behind to be the last boats of this pool to finish the leg before the clocked ticked over.

Ardley Athletic was just short of the line with Apathetic Thistle, Whiz Bang Wallop and No-Eye Deer a distance back from him.

The most spread out pool sees The Wyld Ones and Team DDG 2658 still with a huge amount of ocean to cover to make the start of Leg 2 - a leg which both most hope turns out better than this one.

Congratulations to all skippers and crews.

The Draw for Leg 2 will be made within the next 2 days and the 5 GW leg to Wellington, rounding Cape Horn and taking in the Southern Oceans, will begin on Saturday.

In the mean-time - for those already in port - Buenos Aires awaits :D

That was a close finish between myself and Karrde, with him using 92% of Tack 8 and me needing just 4% of Tack 9 to cross the line (had to zoom right in just to find Tack 9!) My dead-on navigation for Tack 8 was actually my undoing - if I'd had a nav error, it would have been to port and I would have crossed the line on that tack. I also noticed Admin coming within 0.6 of a mile of Isla de Flores - maybe he was just dropping off Tradewinds for a lengthy stay? ;)

I assume that the points carried over in our last tacks won't count towards our first tacks in Leg 2?

Curses to you slarty, i thought i had 3rd wrapped up after everyone but my keeper got a clean sheet, so figured itd be a nice cruise to the line. I even had Laursen but he wasn't due up til my 5th tack, whereas he was you're 2nd tack. The other annoying thing about it was that Laursen's big score gave a big navigation error, but it ended up being a shortcut as your boat more or less headed straight towards port instead of heading SW towards the next waypoint :(

I'm happy enough, though, to be in the top5 for my Pool, especially after having 2 GW scores of 39 in a row towards the end

Special Riders random navigation was hilarious, but i think they must have gotten bored of racing and decided to trace the outline of a bird! :D

Great work Romyn, keep it up :D

Do all the boats continue from where they left off at the end of leg 1? And have to finish out the first leg before they get onto the next one? Or are we all equalised at the start of each leg as i was expecting?

Didn't think I had a chance of catching you last week - must have been that outboard I persuaded the Portuguese fishermen to fit when I ran aground.
I'm afraid you're going to have to settle for a Celtic 1-2-3-4 rather than an Irish 1-2-3

Is it just me or does this sound like a bad idea in a boat? :D

[edit]Oh poopies I've just cursed myself, better dig out the woolly undies and Oates Guide to Antarctic Rambling[/edit]

'bad ideas' didn't enter into the equation when a fearless and intrepid explorer was involved. they were just unlucky striking a particularly bad winter and 1 or 2 fifty-fifty decisions that went the wrong way. not having a transmitter was risk in hindsight too but radio was in its infancy back then and not taken that seriously anyway.

but that doesn't count when it comes to my paltry performance, which is best summed up by mewithoutyou's tune - 'messes of men' ...

"I do not exist, but faithfully insist
Sailing in our separate ships
and from each tiny caravelle
Tiring and trying there's unnecessary dying
like the horseshoe crab in its proper seasons sheds its shell
Such distance from our friends
like a scratch across a lens,
made everything look wrong from anywhere we stood
and our paper blew away before we'd left the bay,
so half-blind we wrote these songs on sheets of salty wood

Caught me making eyes at the other boatman's wives,
and heard me laughing louder at the jokes told by their daughters
I'd set my course for land,
but you well understand
it takes a steady hand to navigate adulterous waters
The propeller's spinning blades held acquaintance with the waves
as there's mistakes I've made no rowing could outrun
The cloth blowing on the mast like to say I've got no past
but I'm nonetheless the librarian and secretary's son
with tarnish on my brass and mildew on my glass,
I'd never want someone so crass as to want someone like me
but a few leagues off the shore, I bit a flashing lure
and I assure you, it was not what I expected it to be!
I still taste its kiss, that dull hook in my lip
is a memory as useless as a rod without a reel
To an anchor ever-dropped, seasick yet still docked
Captain spotted napping with his first mate at the wheel,
floating forgetfully along, with no need to be strong
We keep our confessions long and when we pray we keep it short

I drank a thimble full of fire and I'm not ever coming back

Oh, my God!

I do not exist we faithfully insist
while watching sink the heavy ship of everything we knew
If ever you come near I'll hold up high a mirror
Lord, I could never show you anything as beautiful as You"

Answering a couple of queries...

Yes - no points carried over.

It's as you thought - All boats start the 2nd leg at the same time from a start line, as with Leg 1. You can see the route by selecting the next leg in the Route part of the GE file. The make-up of the next set of pools will be announced in a couple of days.

How could I,as a gentleman, have left the delightful Honeyballs behind, all alone,in the middle of that vast ocean ? I had no choice but to stay and keep her company ! Besides, once the rest of the Group C fleet had disappeared over the horizon,we were able to spend some quality time together. I know Honeyballs,I promised to say not a word about it - my lips are sealed, don't you worry my dear - the NotW won't hear about our positions

Cor blimey! Got myself into a right 2-and-8! Got the Apparent Wind direction all wrong, thinking it was Aback (when it wasn't - IblameFlyman!). My calls of Ahoy went unheeded, as I started travelling Against the Sun with my left-handed ropes (free with my left-handed screwdriver). Personally, I reckon somebody committed Barratry against me, but I have no proof.

However, for the next leg, I have my Beaufort wind scale properly configured now, and my Boomkin is back up and running... so expect my Boatswain to see my through from almost first to last this time around.

Next Leg - I will go through the letters C and D
