Looks like next Premier League season begins on Sat 16 Aug 2008.

For brief background, see both posts on 5 Oct in 'Dates for 2007_08 Season' thread:

A useful date to know. The worst thing is being on holiday the week before kick off, with no internet access!

Just avoid the first two weeks in August every year and you should be fine.

There is a debate between the 9th and the 16th .....

The date of next season's FA Cup final is in doubt after Premier League clubs campaigned for the start of next campaign to be delayed by a week

From Sunday newspaper review

The SPL Board decided today that Season 2008/09 will commence on Saturday 9 August 2008 and will not incorporate a winter break.

For info, the 2008-09 Serie A season will kick off on Sunday 31 August.

As a comparison. the first league matches in Italy this term were played on Sun 26 Aug 2007.

PS "It is difficult to tell if a female gorilla is pregnant since her stomach is large to begin with (for food digestion). However, some females have swollen knuckles temporarily during pregnancy."

Sounds more like some humans I've known if you substitute the last word with "pms"

A friendly has been arranged between England and Czech Republic at Wembley on Wed 20 August 2008.

Other football internationals are also being arranged for that day, eg:
Scotland v N Ireland; France v Tunisia

So it's probable that the second tranche of Premier League fixtures will not be scheduled during that midweek. This is a change from the two previous seasons, eg, in August 2007, when the first three sets were played on Sat/Sun 11/12, Tue/Wed 14/15 and Sat/Sun 18/19.

Incidentally, the Eng-Czech match will be the first to be broadcast by Setanta under the TV company's new partnership with the FA.
