Following on from viewtopic.php?f=83&t=58341 and to mark the great man's 50th birthday tomorrow, here's a new quiz. This time identify the Smiths/solo track from the following lyric sample:

1. As Antony said to Cleopatra, as he opened a crate of ale “Ooooh I say” Some girls are bigger than others Knulpuk
2. There are explosive kegs, between my legs Dear God please Help me jOnners

3. So I checked all the registered historical facts and I was shocked into shame to discover that I'm the 18th pale descendant of some old queen or other Queen is Dead Mike_

4. A symbol of when mad mad lovers must pause and draw the line November spawned a monster? Knulpuk
5. You say: "ere thrice the sun hath done salutation to the dawn" Cemetery Gates Mike_

6. Rejection is one thing, but rejection from a fool is cruel I dont mind if you forget me Knulpuk

7. I’m gonna be sick all over, your frankly vulgar, red pullover Our Frank jOnners

8. All over Battersea, some hope and some despair You're the one for me Fatty jOnners

9. I never realised you wrote such bloody awful poetry Frankly Mr Shankley Knulpuk

10. Spending warm summer days indoors writing frightening verse to a buck-toothed girl from Luxemburg Ask Knulpuk
11. If they dare touch a hair on your head I’ll fight to the last breath Hand in glove Mike_!!

12. Win yourself a cheap tray. Share some greased tea with me ... Every day is like Sunday Knulpuk

13. And the pain was enough to make a shy bald Buddhist reflect and plan a mass murder Stop me if you think .... Knulpuk
14. I wear black on the outside cos black is how I feel on the inside Unlovable Mike_

15. So if you ever need self-validation, just meet me in the alley by the railway station I want the one I can't have Mike_

16. The first last lad under the sod. First of the gang to die Knulpuk

17. I will be in the bar, with my head on the bar The more you ignore me the closer I get jOnners

18. We’ve never seen a keener window-cleaner Roy's Keen j0nners

19. See the life I’ve had could make a good man bad Please please please let me get what I want Knulpuk

20. I tried to surprise you, I crept up behind you, with a homeless Chihuahua King Leer goldenballs

Thanks to Mike_ I know 11 - but its far too satisfying imagining him singing it and wracking his brain to actually respond.

Don't recognise either - I am guessing late Morrissey solo stuff.

Thanks for the quiz!

Thanks Darbyand.

I would say that they might be from 'Kill Uncle' that kind of time (early '90's I think). For me, his worst album - although I've got the album I very rarely listen to it. It's bizarre, as I thought Viva Hate, Your Arsenal, Beethoven was Deaf & Vauxhall were excellent. In fact, the only possible exceptions for me are Southpaw Grammar & Maladjusted.

I've been listening to Kill Unlcle a bit recently and it does have its charms. It's a pop album really (he co-wrote it with the fella from Fairground Attraction) so sometimes sounds a bit flimsy compared to his other stuff but there's some nice tunes too. Maldjusted and Southpaw I hardly ever listen to.

As for the quiz, there is indeed one from Kill Uncle and one from Maladjusted, chosen for a FISO audience.

You're going to love 18 murf.

Maybe you could come up with the Robert Smith equivalent?

Are maladjusted and Southpaw.. even worth buying, or only for obsessive moz completists? Seems to me that no-one here listens to 'em much?

tommy - i would say that there are a couple of good moments on Southpaw Grammar. I like 'The Teachers are Afraid of the Pupils', 'Reader Meets Author' and 'The Operation'. Have a butcher's at the reviews on Amazon. If you like Mozza, I'd give it a bash, but probably steer clear of Maladjusted.

Well if you could pick them up for a couple of quid off ebay or something there's the odd good tune but wouldn't go near them at full price. Southpaw sounds like a rock album a lot of the time and apparently was written as an anti-dote to the increasingly lame Britpop of the era.

Correct!

Wiki:

The title is an obvious pun of the name of former Nottingham Forest and Manchester United footballer Roy Keane - a fact Morrissey acknowledged during live performances of the song by changing the lyrics to "never seen a keener midfielder".

Cheers, I'll see if I can get hold of Southpaw.

I think Vauxhall and I remains my favourite solo work (but bona drag has the best songs)
