I'm planning on doing a bit of travelling up and down the Country this year on various Golfing Trips and as I'm notorious for getting lost I've decided I'm going to invest in a Sat Nav, and this leads me to my silly question.

Let's say for simplicity that I am travelling from Carlisle to Bristol and I set my Sat Nav for the journey and off I go. What happens if half way down the M6 I suddenly decide to make a detour to visit someone in Manchester, or someone in Stoke, do I have to keep resetting the Sat Nav to find my way to Bristol. ?

It should recalculate your route if you go off course for any reason.

They normally save recent destinations as well, so if you need the Sat Nav to find your way to the Massage Parlour in Stoke on the way down to Bristol you can then easily reset it to your original destination.

If you don't turn it off or reprogramme the destination during your diversion it will recalculate the journey but will also drive you up the wall telling you to do u-turns until you've finished your detour and are back on your way.

Mrs Pa doesn't drive, knows absolutely nothing about Computers (she refers to it as my "wee television") she has never owned a Mobile Phone and wouldn't have a clue how to work one let alone a Sat Nav. And I am not joking.

All in all the perfect wife.

More useless information about Mrs Pa. She is a Piano Teacher with a Masters Degree in Music, but she has never worked since we got married 30 years ago. She has no interest whatsover in Sport, doesn't drink alcohol, enjoys the WRI and as I mentioned before she doesn't drive, knows absolutely nothing about Computers or Mobile Phones and ......... she trusts me implicitly. What more could a man ask for :D

Never had a satnav, I suppose I'm an old traditionalist. Go out, buy a map, take it home and pin it on your wall. Leave it there for 3 months and you'll be surprised how familiar you become with geography of the area. Strangely enough I'm known as Mr Satnav here.

As a matter of interest, if people are happy with machines telling them which way to go, how long will it be before you're happy with the machine doing the driving? It could end up being quite hilarious.
I can hear Pa's wife saying 'It is, it is'

1. Retractable teeth
2. A flat head to put your beer on
3. If she turned into a bacon butty at midnight it would be nice.

I doubt it, she must have been 60 in the late 80's. She used to hang around Roscoe St, off Hardman St.

To get back to my original question am I correct in asuming that I don't have to reset the Sat Nav if I decide to make an unscheduled 20 mile detour from the originaly planned and preset route. How does the Sat Nav recognise this ? Are there transmitters on the roads that send out signals that the Sat Nav picks up. I'm bamboozled. :?

The sat nav connects to satellites and they track where you are.

So they can re-direct you from your "diversion"; assuming that you can find it and put up with the Sat Nav constantly telling you to turn round, go left when you want to go right etc.......

So what you are basically saying is that they are a load of sh*te and I'd be better off with a £1.50 AA Road Map from Supersave. :D

Yes to Map, obviously - thjey are unnecessary gadgets imho.

It isn't too tricky to get realtively close to most places, and then the map is good.........

I was driven using one from Ipswich NE of London to Olympia in West London; and the driver had it set to direct route - it was a nightmare, straight through London on a Sunday morning is a pain. I managed it in half the time in rush-hour
