Razor or Electric Shaver?

I always use a Razor (Close shave) but am thinking of switching to an Electric as Razors are ridiculously expensive £6+ for a pack of 4

Which do you opt for and why?

Can Electric Shavers give as close a shave as Razors? if so anyone got any recommendations?

Cheers.

They give a close shave first few months then go blunt despite regular declogging so I've gone the other way right now to razors though Tesco triple blades seem good enough so not overly expensive especially if admittedly rarely you don't shave every day and declog the blades after each shave. If you were to pick an electric shaver you could replace the heads once they go blunt so that's one option. The last one I had was a Remington R5130 which took some getting used to the more flimsy design compared to my previous Phillishave.Plus found some £6 Phillishave head replacements that are usually over £20:

I think there was at thread on this subject not too long ago. Maybe worth a search for further info?

As bloggie says, electric are fine initially, and then they blunt and so the heads need replacing, although no matter what the marketing gumpf says, they are never as close as a standard razor wet shave IMHO.

That said, as you say Footy, new blades such as Gillette razors are crazily expensive, and I noticed that a replacement head on one electric razor was "only" £35 and i would imagine you would ideally get one of those a year? So maybe they even themselves out a bit?

Thanks for your responses guys......

I was thinking £60-£100 for an electric shaver and over the long run I will save a lot of money but on reflection.....

I want a close shave and if the best way to get it is with razors then I will stick with them.......

I suppose I don't shave that often (once a week) Quattros tend to start getting blunt and crammed with beard hair after a month so I guess over a year I only really buy 3 - 4 packs of 4 = £25

I guess that ain't bad for a years worth of shaving.

Razors all the way, even if those branded ones seem expensive!

If you only shave once a week and are happy to be stubbly 6 days a week then why on earth does it matter how close the shave is???

Seriously Footy,

I use a proper razor ( the sort that take old fashioned blades), and Wilkinson sword are as cheap as chips and stay sharper longer.

You have to be a wee bit more careful though.

Lol...good point......

Well...

I don't like shaving 1-2 or even 3 days after the 1st shave (when the stubble is still short) as I find it cuts at the skin, pulls at the hair and does not give a smooth shave, once the beard is 3+ millimetres long it is so much easier to shave off and gives a smooth shave even if it is just for a day.

I probably should shave twice a week, once on Sunday then Wednesday night....that would probably be ok as the hair is probably just long enough by then for a no hassle shave, but I am too lazy.

Don't you guys find that it cuts and pulls if you shave too often when stubble is short?

I would prefer the smooth shaven look all the time but my skin can't take it.

They need to invent Veet for your face.

My brother is like that, he has to buy his razors from toys'r'us.

You need to wash and condition your stubble properly if this is the case.
Some good products out there for just this scenario, and you'll smell pretty for the girls.

I've got face skin like leather, soap does the job for me.

Seconded with the much maligned soap - not so sure about the face like leather, though

I hate shaving, so just have perma-stubble and use the mrs hairdressing razor to run over my beard once or twice a week to keep it tidy.

that being said, I don't have a job where I need to be presentable

I've never felt as if I've had a good shave after using an electric razor so I alternate between my Philips Power Touch Image

and my Gilette Fusion (although I preferred the old Mach 3). My routine is something like, Monday/Tuesday, Electric Shave. Wednesday Wet Shave. Thursday/Friday, Electric Shave. Sat/Sun Wet Shave.

Funnily enough I was having a discussion with my old Uncle on Thursday about this. He's 79 and he told me that all his life he has only ever used an electric shaver

If I haven't shaved for a few days than an electric razor is useless and it removes nothing.

Conclusion:

Electric shaver = Crap

Razor = Good

Like I said before, if they can make a Veet type product for the beard then that would be king, 10 seconds to put it on, wash off after a minutes, smooth as a babies ass.

Not going to happen though I guess as face skin is too sensitive.

I once went a year using an electric razor on one side of my face, and a wet razor on the other. I hardly knew any difference. :D

Bought a battery powered 'beard trimmer' the other day £10 from Argos (can be found even cheaper) its called the Wahl Groomsman.

I didn't buy it to trim my beard though, it works great as a pube/ass trimmer. nothing better!

Try it out.
