By the way - I've sorted out the lists, making sure each film appears in round 2 only once, in (hopefully) the most apt genre, takes a hell of a sorting out, checking back through the votes etc to replace those films I've omitted. Hopefully you all agree with the chosen genres and may be pleased to see a few films that narrowly missed out have now been included at the expense of those in multiple genres.

I once stubbed my toe really, really hard. That was better than Apocalypse Now.

I've never seen it, should I avoid it? Some folks obviously rate it.

I think my problem with the film was that I didn't watch it until my late 20s and therefore things like the glorification of violence/war and napalm being a great fun mass-killer etc didn't appeal to me. Note how on the stats the votes drop off as the ages increase.

That said Spiny, I always think that you should ignore most other peoples ratings of films and make up your own mind. I found it overly long and self-indulgent but you may find it engrossing and deep; lots of other people obviously do.

interestingly, Apocalypse Now is also not my favourite war film and war is my 2nd favourite film genre after sci-fi. i'm appreciating the movie more with time but it still does not beat some seriously good war films out there imo. my favourite movies in this list are in this order:

Apocalypse Now
The Great Escape

i have not included Schindler's List because it's hard to call it a favourite - it is a film about cold-blooded murder after all and i find it quite hard to watch. it is such an important film though imo so i've voted for it too.

I voted for Apocalypse Now, mainly for its ambition and its epic quality. Also it scared me. Brando's ramblings at the end were gobbledegook, but in a way they complemented the film: the whole thing had a surreal-like quality, which is what I imagine being caught up in a real war situation would be like: both terrifying and meaningless. I've seen all the films in this list but Apocaplyse Now is the only one I'd like to see again.

This is one of those rare categories where ever film is good and most are very good. I only voted for Das Boot, which i think is the best of the finalists, to try and give it the best chance of advancing, but no luck.
