Painful to watch, poor fella.

I wonder if he'll change his pants before the playoff?

:D

Just hit his tee shot brilliantly 20 yards past Westwood...right behind a huge tree

Sometimes it's not your day.

Westwood wins

Both missed the same putt from 4 feet at the 3rd playoff hole, played the next hole perfectly - will help him get past the 'choke' slurs against him prior to this weeks US Open.

Well done Lee 8-)

Really wanted him to hole that long putt for a 6 on the last hole, but you just knew it wasn't going to happen :(

Surprised he got the 3½ footer to get in the play-off!

Amazed Karlsson nearly won, looked really out of sorts with his routine (heat the problem, maybe?), left a lot of putts short too :?

I think the statement that the media are making in that "Garrigus only needed to double-bogey the last to win" isn't quite right...as they're forgetting the fact that Karlsson could have made birdie down the 18th to get to 11-under.

Hence, I'm not sure that the medium iron, wedge, wedge option that they're talking about was really an option for Garrigus, as many golfers have failed to get down in three from 100 yards on the last hole - and he would have looked just as silly if "playing safe" had back-fired.

Even so, it was a blow-up of the highest proportions, although I personally think his third shot was really his downfall...and he did well to make decent contact with his fourth shot to find the fairway with his chip out in order to secure a seven.

Good to see Westwood win on American soil, but very sad to see such a collapse when a win would have changed Garrigus' career completely...

On Betfair, there was over £10k placed on the unlucky chap at 1.01

Some people really did their money.

Westwood was 99/1 playing the 18th.

Typical BBC Radio 5 Live this morning. "Lee Westwood won the St. Jude Classic after beating Robert Karlsson in a play-off." Talk about cutting to the chase!

I went to bed last night after checking on my PGA Tour iPhone app that Westwood was 2 behind, having finished his round, with the leader on the 18th.... :?

I agree with the sentiment, but he still pocketed $0.5m and on the radio commentary they were suggesting he gets the 500 Fedex Cup points with neither of the Europeans being full Tour members, which goes a long way to(or even guaranteeing) he'll tee it up at the start of the Fedex Cup.

Sorry to disagree Mr Green medium iron, wedge, wedge was totally 100% the play. To not play safe on a dangerous tee shot with a three shot lead (ok potentially two shot lead if your partner happens to birdie) was total madness, he unfortunately paid a very heavy price.

I think we have a benefit of hindsight issue here. He had been playing well, having just made a couple of birdies, was feeling fine about his game, and changing to a negative strategy could easily have backfired too. He went with the positive strategy, and unfortunately messed it up. I guess it depends how he felt on the tee - I doubt anybody has asked him. If it were I, and I felt unsure, then I would probably switch to the negative approach, but if I had been feeling confident all day, having played great golf all weekend, I doubt I would suddenly worry that I may make a royal-mess of this if I'm not careful. Unlucky, but he'll come back stronger hopefully.

I'm not so sure he will. :|

A pop up on Sky last night showed his career earnings to be $3.3m. Initially I thought 'oh he'll be all right' Then I saw that he'd turned pro in 1998. So thats approx $250K a year. Not to be sniffed at, but after fees/expenses etc hes probably on the equivalent of half that (I'm pure guessing here, maybe someone with more knowledge could firm up these figures). $125K a year roughly converts to say £80K. Again a nice salary, but to have the chance he did last night to earn $1m and drop to $500K because of a triple bogey, thats gotta hurt.

Anyway, everytime I think of this guy I can't help but think of his trousers  Why the hell doesn't he wear black pants :?

:D
