Another sneaky little Stealth Tax by the Government. I received my Road Tax notification in the post last week for £175, but when I went to pay it I was told that it was in fact £200 ....that's a 12.5% increase  .

Apparently the notification had been printed prior to the increase. I never knew that Darling had bumped it up again, or was he hoping that we wouldn't notice.

To be more precise it is a 14.3% increase

How can Labour expect us to take seriously a Chancellor named after this chap?

Just in case people still think they pay Road Tax please read the following link

http://ipayroadtax.com/

For those that cant be ar sed with the link but still think they pay Road Tax, you dont. Its VED (Vehicle Excise Duty) or Car Tax. Money from which goes in the country's coffers. Our councils pretend to deal with road up keep and this comes from Council Tax

Cheers :D

Councils don't control the trunk roads / motorways, that is the Highways Agency who are funded by the very coffers that everyone's 'Vehicle Excise Duty' goes into.

Without wanting to stray too far off Pa's Car Tax increase thread  , I dont see anywhere on your link Murf that says the highways are funded solely by VED or car owners and that myself and other non VED payers dont contribute.

This Tax guide link goes a little way in trying to tell us we all pay for the up keep of roads but strangley doesn't mention the Highways Agency. Annoyingly though it still refers to the tax as Road Tax, i mean ffs are they for real?

oh, I took the liberty of emailing them for further clarity :D

Why is this a "stealth" tax?

Drive a big fuel shitty car, pay high tax, drive a small fuel efficient diesel, pay bigger all

Seems a very fair way of doing it to me :?

If it wasnt clear to people directly after the budget that road tax was going up by 14% then I would say that it is a stealth tax.
If Pa's tax was only 175 before the budget then I very much doubt his car was /is a gas guzzler.Besides the ratings are done on co2 emmisions not on the fuel efficiency of the engine

He's right, it wasn't very well publicised but I don't understand. Why, when I was reading the summaries as I have to do, did I not notice it? :?

Obviously it's not up to the government to publicise it but I would have thought the media would have got hold of it.

I didn't say they are. Virtually all taxes in this country go directly into the main government 'coffers' and everything comes out of those 'coffers'. Tax on fags doesn't directly fund the NHS and tax on cars doesn't directly fund the Highways Agency. Very little is 'ring fenced' to directly fund anything.

So basically an employed, council tax paying cyclists contributes towards not only the up keep of the roads but also the motorways. I/we kind of already knew that. I bet a lot of people didn't though.

Motorists who Smoke and are high earners obviuosly contribute more, but im not complaining about funding someone elses lung transplant either. Its pobably the fairest way to distribute taxes and one of the reasons why ROAD TAX was abolished!!! (people thinking they owned the road, or NHS etc)

allegedly the ministry of silly taxes will shortly be taxing walking.

not in the labour manifesto, but despite the reduction in places where people can walk a walking tax will become payable in 2011. there will be a test to ensure people in wheelchairs like that bloke from little britain really can't walk. electrodes will be applied to assist in walking on their own.

there will also be a bankers rebate introduced at the same time. if you are a banker there is no need to prove it but if your circumstance suggest you have had at least a £100k bonus then you will be entitled to a 40% rebate. this will be known as the rbtr (rich b@st@rd tax rebate).

the new head of the tax dept is to be obi wan knobi. who is looking at introducing a new wan knobi tax, to be known as the w@nking tax. the good news is that this is likely to apply to not only all bankers but all politicians aswell!

Joking aside, UKIP are actually planning to tax cycling. OK so they're barking mad and no-one in their right mind would vote for them, but it's actually in their manifesto.
