Has he killed his movie "career" by his performance at the Golden Globes ?

Some of the Hollywood crowd are not best pleased with his performance as host.

I think the Ricky Gervais in The Office, Extras and the recent Karl Pilkington thing is excellent.

He's not much cop as either a big screen actor or a stand up comedian though and it seems he has got a wee bit too big for his boots.

I thought most of it was pretty funny - well, going only by the quotes I have read and the odd news clip. If they wanted stale and boring, they should have hired Jason Manford to host it. The big problem is, the Americans tend not to like that kind of cruel humour.

Unfortunately though, it will probably prove a bad career move for Gervais in the US.

He was just as controversial at the globes last year, yet they still asked him back.
As regards his career, you could draw comparisons with Noel Gallagher's, he built up a following then huge success, but once the money is piled up in the bank the creative juices dry up.
I have watched him since he did a spot on channel 4's the 11 o'clock show, what was frustrating is that he used a lot of the same material verbatim when he did his chat show, the Ricky Gervais show.
We all know the Office and Extras were pure gold (his Definately Maybe and Morning Glory) and his stand-ups began well but his latest, Science was a huge let down. He has the habit of rehashing his old material, which means too often you can see the where the anecdote/observation is going.
I have a hunch he may be more of a producer/director now and do less writing and performing.

IMO he did not have much of a Holywood career to kill anyway, they have no clue where to cast him so it can't do much harm.

They wanted him to be hard-hitting and brash. All of the trailers leading up to the event had Gervais saying he was going to taunt everyone present. None of this "We love you Hollywood" BS

So there should have been no surprises.

Apart from him disappearing for an hour after his introduction - be interesting to find out what happened there when it comes out.

Gervais has always been marmite in my view - although Hollywood never saw that initially - they couldn't get enough of him. It does help that people like Letterman absolutely adore Ricky and this latest performance at the Global Globes will not harm his career - it's getting people to talk and that can only be good. The reality though is he could/can never be the face of a Hollywood blockbuster. What he can do is create funny shows, direct comedy movies and keep trying to push the envelope. Don't be surprised to see him eventually host his own chat show stateside (and then see it be pulled less then 1 season later!)

He'll never really be primetime - but there will be plenty of people in Hollywood right now applauding Gervais for saying the things they wanted to say, but were too scared to do so.

Apparently the disappearance was planned. He did the same for 45 mins last year. Apparently, he did not get the right "reaction" last year i.e to be another Russell Brand; and was going to go further this year, and this had been trailed. Apparently, he also picked which "presenders" (Gervais seems unable to put the "t" in the word), and he did so on comic potential. (This was on R5 "Through the night" - the joys of insomnia :( )

I think that it has to do with American sensitivity to criticism. Jeez, an 84 year old man marries 24 year old, is like heaven sent to a comedian, and who can not laugh at a Bribery Scandal? Not too sure that the gag about helping the Main Speaker, person from Hollywood Press Organisation was too clever, though. Apparently he is getting on a bit and Wicky said that he had helped him off the toilet, and put his teeth in for him.

He is hit or miss for me, ever very funny, or very unfunny; and is becoming a case of the "the eagle has soared, and lost orbit...."

I'd love to dump him down an oubliette and never see him, or hear his voice ever again.

Pretty much agree with what Stuboy said

Fair play to him. So some people don't like him, always gonna get that. But can't argue with his success.

It's probably gone to his head a bit, but he's already cracked jokes about that. It's not as tho he's 'pretending' to be friends with Hollywood, he IS friends. Look at who he got for Extras, and how they've asked him to present these awards two years in a row.

Always gonna get criticism. From the snippets I've seen so far of the Globes tho, he's had me giggling and cringing att the same time.

Same old Gervais then! Nothing to see here, move on people :D
