Radio 1 has seriously gone downhill

How would you reinvent it?

For myself I would get rid of Chris Moyles

Bring back Mark n lard for the morning show

Katie Lawler for the mid morning show

early afternoon has to go to Sam n Mark for the children

and late afternoon lets bring in the great Tim Shaw for 4pm to 7pm

Move Chris Evans back to Radio 1 so Radio 2 benefit. Crickey, and I thought Wogan was irritating.

I quite like the current line up.

Don't like it so much once Scott Mills has finished, but I generally don't listen much after 17:30 anyway.

Edit to add, I didn't used to like Greg James, but he has really "grown on me" so to speak.

Avoid at all costs for me.

Talksport 90% of the time, smooth radio every now and again.

The one thing i will say about R1, is that Chris Moyles has a 'massive' following!! Dropping him from his slot would prove costly, imo.

reckon? is it not just that most folk listen at that time?

I generally listen to radio scotland in the morning (discussion/phone in), radio 2 during the day (hate steve wright  ) and radio scotland (news or football show) on the way home.... tend not to listen to radio at home apart from the excellent "Off the Ball" (again, radio Scotland)

It is partially being reinvented as Radio 2. Unfortunately there is still some old school Radio 2 amongst it but it is probably still the best station overall (I don't do adverts or constant re-playing of the top 40 / playlist).

Radio 1 has had it. It always mirrors the current trend in music. So, you tune in and you get a handful of dull R n B songs or gangsta rap and that's it. Or fatty Moyles tarting up his ego. Who listens to the chart countdown these days ? Those great days of trying to record the top 40 on a C90 cassette have long bitten the dust (and I always got the bleedin DJ talking over the end of the song  ). Music has changed. Who buys music these days ? Not the kids. They get it for free. No longer do they have the added magic of walking into Our Price to buy the latest Pop Will Eat Itself limited edition picture disc (Ok, so that was just me  )

Scott Mills is the only decent DJ left. But that's my opinion and I'm clinging on to my 30's. Moyles is a fat old man. How is he going to attract the kids. (Chappers and Comedy Dave are great mind)

Some great shouts above but as good as Chris Evans was if they got him back, you wouldn't have all the britpop classics as he was very much part and parcel of that era. "Good morning, it's Chris Evans and on todays show we have NDubz,Eminem, Black Eyed Peas etc". Nah, wouldn't work. Let him play the Kinks on Radio 2 8-)

Mark and Lard were excellen but they didn't work on the Radio 1 breakfast show. The original Monday night "Out on Blue 6" was excellent but that must be twenty years ago now  Danny Baker was great on five live but that didn't work on R1 either. Simon Mayo was excellent and on Radio 2 the last I heard. Used to lkove the confessions slot....

The evening session with Lamacq and Whiley was great, especially throughout the 90's (Didn't Mark Goodier do it before  ?). But that time has been and gone. Doesn't Zane Lowe do it now ? I've no idea.

But they've all had their time. Trouble is these days, your raveheads and R n B fans listen to Kiss, metalers listen to Kerrang and Indie Kids to XFM. The more mature indie old man will go to Radio 2 or 6. Your Dad will listen to smooth (actually its not bad :? ) It's all so fragmented.

Is it struggling for listeners at all, or is it just that we're not in the target demographic? Its current playlist contains, among others, Noah and the Whale, Adele, Bullet for My Valentine, The Wombats, Two Door Cinema Club - hardly wall-to-wall R'n'B and hip-hop as some have claimed. I have never understood the appeal of Chris Moyles but for some reason he's extremely popular. I think Jo Whiley is moving to 2 and Maconie & Radcliffe are moving to 6.

The world moves on, kids' tastes change, the one thing I would say is that Radio 1 has to be a hell of a lot better now than in the 80s when it was the domain of DLT, Tony Blackburn, Peter Powell, Mike Read, Simon Bates et al, that was truly appalling.

I remember it being excellent from 8pm, with Skinner then Peel, even Five 45's was often a good listen. Powell was not that bad, for a while, I thought Blackburn was at Capital, although Bates and DLT were awful and Read lost any credibility over Relax.....

Slightly on topic, but is anyone else listening to Greg James right now?

You may or may not know but he has a daily feature called "Gregs best bit of the radio from yesterday".

Well todays has just been played and it was a female sports newsreader talking about Capello and Jack Wilshere. Her "news" went like this -

"And Fabio Capello has been taking it" *paused and then rephrased* "talking up arsenals midfielder Wilshere"

Tony Blackburn was definitely at Radio 1 for a long while - remember the dog (was it Arnold)?

I don't recall Skinner doing the evening slot, I probably started listening to that when Mark Goodier did it (maybe Janice Long did it before then?). To be fair Radio 1 always got a lot more interesting around that time and still does, I think Zane Lowe is pretty similar from what I've heard. And Peely was just Peely, never really fitting in, sadly he'd been pretty well sidelined by the time he died, I dare say a few higher-ups at R1 were pretty relieved to hear that news... :(

Richard Skinner, then "Kid" Jensen (who was surprisingly good) then Long and Goodier ?

No memory of dog, but then I doubt I would have listened to Blackburn - and Steve Wright was shite, too.

Was always Kid Jensen in my era, the pre-Peel slot. 8-10??

At least in those days the rest of Radio 1 (pre 8pm!) had a real identity, however sappy. Now it is just a mess, designed for everybody and nobody. Who listens to it?? I wouldn't mind seeing the market research results on that one! Moyles is somehow popular which says more for the awful taste of the British public than for his talent.

I also don't understand the modern kids taste in music - in my era the oldies (my current age) moaned about "the row" we listened to but it rebelled and had an edge "you don't understand dad" etc. Nowadays it is just dull, dull, dull. All R&B boringness, no rebellion, no edge, music for the brain dead. Even the rebels like Dizzee Rascal end up mainstream.

Jensen took over in 81-2, I would guess.

Don't most of these "rebels" go mainstream? Probably more so from the alleged R'n'B side of things, then the rock side.

As an aside what does the dross called R'n'B have to do with Rhythm and Blues?

Radio 1 is for the youth, it's something you grow out of & rarely return too. Strange that a forum whose demographic would be largely mid 30's-mid 40's even has a thread on it - not surprisingly though it has meandered into a 'memories of the '70's/'80's thread when the majority of FISOers were in their youth and as such the target audience.

Not my cup of tea any more, which undoubtedly says as much about how old I'm getting as it does about the state of Radio 1 - however good or bad that may be.

Agreed AKNel. I am on the brink of Moyles at the moment and can tollerate him most mornings but he is more my age group.

I sent an email a couple of years ago to have a rant about how rubbish Mills was. I got a reply back which was basically saying "by your comments you are too old to be our target audience anyway" it was shortly after I noticed my first grey hair......

I'm sure you can see the irony in that! I'm pretty sure that the "yoof of today" think that their music is full of edge, it's just not an edge we can grasp in the same way our parents couldn't either. I bet they think that N-Dubz are reet edgy.

I don't get that either. Original R n B by Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters etc, went on to inspire rock n rollers, The Stones, The Who and then...er...R Kelly :? What happened to the instruments :? ? PS There are some decent R n B tunes - One thing by Amerie, No Diggity by Blackstreet, Hey Ya and Ms Jackson by Outkast but most is bland "say heeeeyyyyyehhooooo" etcetera.

Think most agree its time for Moyles to climb Kilimanjaro again but this time his guide party do a runner
