How could anyone watch the Goodfellas clip and not vote for it? It's funnier and crazier than anything in Life of Brian (a movie I really like), and it's not even a comedy. I can't see how anyone can ever forget that scene after watching it once. Joe Pesci is unbelievable.

i agree with pouzar. said on theother thread that i enjoy godfather but its not my favourite - i think goodfellas is the best US gangster movie of all of them. aside from the script and superb casting, on a technical level it is also superb.

for eg: the scene where ray liotta takes the girl on a date and they enter through the back door of the restaurant and end up at a new table at the stage: at the time this was highly praised as one fo the most complicated and effective scenes of all time - the entire scene was filmed in one take with the camera crew walking backwards through the restaurant passages to capture the effect of the big man arriving at the restaurant. brilliant.

There are a couple of laugh-out-loud moments in Life of Brian but it's not worth a place in the semi-finals IMO. None of the Monty Python films are as funny as Fawlty Towers, nor, come to that, are they as funny as the original Monty Python TV shows. In fact (warming to my theme) I'd rather watch A Fish Called Wanda, which (unlike Brian) is a brilliantly plotted and structured film as well as being very funny.

I reckon there's some dodgy voting going on here.

Life of Brian beating Goodfellas??

Depends whether you're voting for the film you like more or the one you admire more. I love both films and freely admit GF is the better film and the one with more meaning but... if I had a choice of which I would watch right now, it would be LoB. So I voted with LoB.

As i was posting these quarter finals, these 2 youtube clips were the best 2 by a mile IMO. I've went for Goodfella's though, as given the choice, 7 times out of 10 I'd prefer to watch that rather than LoB.

Voted for Goodfellas obviously. Will anyone own up to voting for LoB?

I thought we were voting for the one we thought was best, not the one we wanted to watch right now.

I saw American Beauty recently (a film I love), but I certainly wouldn't want to see it again this soon :?

I don't think there's any prescription on how you make your choice, you just go with your gut instinct. I explained my method, everyone will have their own.

It's a bit like saying you want Brazil to win the World Cup because they play attractive football but... you know that Germany are a better side all round and probably deserve to win so maybe you should vote for them instead but... that would be boring but... Brazil don't deserve to win it because of their poor defence... and so on until you make your choice! 8-)

I can honestly say I prefer Life of Brian over Goodfellas. Now if you had pitted "Raging Bull" against LoB, I might have been in a dilemma.

I'm going Goodfellas. LOB's a hoot but feels more of a collection of sketches than a quality movie.

Goodfellas got the true story off to a tee and the characters are incredibly interesting and quotable. I much prefer it to the Godfather probably due to its source material and its more 'truthful' feel. Definitely a film that withstands reruns. And 'Tommy' is one of cinemas 'best' monsters.

Two brilliant films. The best comedy and the best gangster for me. Worthy of The Final itself.

Life of Brian by a whisker. Every scene a winner and instantly memorable. Keep 'em laughing as you go......

I think at least 3 of the 4 may go against my choices by a matter of only a few votes :(

It shocked me too but in a good way. I guess it shows that people prefer a movie that they can enjoy rather than one that scares them and makes them feel uncomfortable. Either that or we're all tasteless Neanderthals!

It was revenge for the Godfather, and a lot of other things. And there was nothing that we could do about it. Life of Brian was a made film, and Goodfellas wasn't. And we had to sit still and take it. It was among the Comedians. It was real greaseball shit. They even shot Goodfellas in the face so it's director couldn't give it an open coffin at the funeral.

There'd have been a few more if he'd realised they were needed to get the gangsta films through

I'm not. As agreed with Pouzar (and disputed by barry) on another thread, it is just a 'silly contest'. :P

Just read the other thread (that's the trouble with the linear nature of forums ....)

Actually I already have two other aliases from early pipsuite days, but it never crossed my mind to use them. I'd never forgive myself :|

Only 1 vote for me.

Stunned that Goodfellas has gone out to be honest. Missed out on best film oscar to Dances With Wolves I think, and now shunned by FISO. What's a film gotta do around here to get recognition. I guess it'll have to live out the rest of its life as a shnook.
