An alternative to Sky Sports News channel...

From media blurb:

Setanta Sports News has announced that it will launch on Thursday 29 November. The 24-hour channel will be available free-to-air on the Virgin Media platform, and on satellite. The channel will cover all relevant sports stories from the UK and abroad, regardless of whether the event is broadcast on a Setanta channel.

Setanta Sports News is jointly owned by Setanta Sports and Virgin Media, and produced by ITN. Its EPG number on Virgin Media is 518. The satellite EPG number is to be confirmed.

Geoff Hill, Editor-in-Chief, Setanta Sports News, said: "We want Setanta Sports News to be fun and engaging for the nation's sports fans. Viewers will get the sports news that matters delivered in a thorough, concise and accurate way, but this channel will be much more than a rolling sports news service—we want the added value of passionate input from fans. We aim to be alongside them at every major sporting event across the UK."

Malcolm Wall, CEO of Content, Virgin Media, said: "This channel represents a new age for sports fans in this country. We're confident its energy will provide a fresh approach to sports news in the UK and by putting fans at the very heart of the channel, we think it will give us the edge with viewers."

From another media source:

Virgin Media has had a sports news gap since the end of February, when BSkyB pulled its basic channel package from its rival's platform in a dispute over carriage fees, which included the Sky Sports News channel (as well as Sky One and Sky News).

The claim is that Setanta Sports News will have a fresh, straightforward approach with the opinions and input of sports fans at the heart of their programming.

and from Setanta themselves:

If you consider yourself to have unlimited sports knowledge, crazy about cricket, fanatical about F1, religious about rugby or even bonkers about boxing then this is the opportunity for you!

We are now recruiting knowledgeable sports fans* from across the UK to represent their favourite team or sport so don't miss the chance to become one of our Fan Correspondents on our brand new 24-hour Sports News channel.

Contributors will talk on phone-in debates and react to news stories concerning their clubs or sports.

Kelly Dalglish is confirmed to present a weekly chat show. The programme will discuss all the main sports stories of the day with a panel of high-profile guests, including a fan phone-in element.

The channel number on Virgin Media is 518 and the satellite number is 435.

checking it out now, unsurprisingly very similar look to Sky though one of the tickers doesn't look quite right. They must have punched the air when Arry got arrested last night

a couple of weeks in and have to say that this makes Sky Sports News look BAFTA worthy. The ticker still stretches and compresses in a way that makes me slightly queasy, the stories repeat on a far too short loop and Steve Claridge is on every 30 seconds. Need to raise their game

But Sky was pretty crap when it started. Plenty of time to improve and it gives Virgin punters a sports news update service.

It is unwatchable. Well done to Setanta for doing that to something I would normally watch without thinking about it!

Ooh, that's horrible.
The two-speed ticker really does turn the stomach and the rest makes me think of a swarm of wasps
