I've missed a few favourite films I'd like to have seen/recorded off the box this week and with Christmas coming there are usually a few good films shown.

If you see that a film you rate highly is on tv why not let us know? If you can name the channel and time, too, all the better!

Amelie is v good. Audrey Tattou (sp?) is v fit in a cutesy, doe-eyed way.
Long Good Friday - that the one w Bob Hoskins as a gangland villain? Never seen it all the way through.

Laurel & Hardy: There are usually some B&W films on BBC over the xmas period, keep your eyes peeled. I was introduced to this (and far more) when I was a kid and my mum foolishly bought me a telly for my bedroom. This is responsible for my girlfriend not understanding half of the social and cultural references I drop in, although she's only a couple of years younger.

LGF is a great film.

i like 'delicatessan' and 'city of the lost children' by those blokes more than 'amelie' but the trademarks are there.

To anyone who has never seen The Long Good Friday, for God's sake don't miss it. Without question one of the best gangster films ever. It's a cracking story with a host of memorable characters and an interesting twist. Look for Pierce Brosnan in a small role. Bob Hoskins is literally brilliant and Helen Mirren as his girlfriend it terrific as always. In the final scene Hoskins puts on an astonishing acting clinic without uttering a word.
I have seen this film three or four times and would stay up late or get up early to see it again. Makes Richie's films look groping and amateurish by comparison.

Yeah, but so does "Police Academy 6: City Under Siege".

I have some Laurel & Hardy DVD's - real early stuff and a rare interview on one of them when they appeared together on This is Your Life in the States.

'A Clockwork Orange' is on Film4 at 11:05 pm, Sunday 17th.

Everyone should see this film at least once and make up their own mind about it.
I give it 5 stars.

It's a great film. First watched an illegal copy about 15 years ago when it was still banned.

re Laurel and Hardy - for a while earlier this year (and before), L&H shorts were shown on BBC2 during the day - no trailers, very little description in the listings, but I taped most of them and managed to get my 6-year-old daughter interested too - pure pleasure.

Harold Lloyd is great, but I see no reason to make comparisons - Lloyd was more about stunts while L&H is more about good writing, and genius performances (in fact, if you're going to compare, I'd tentatively suggest that Buster Keaton was better than both). One of my cinema highlights of this year was taking my daughter to see Safety Last in a special one-off showing at our local arts cinema - brilliant, and she loved it.

Anyone see Paul Merton's series on silent comedy on BBC4 earlier this year?

Clockwork Orange had the same effect as THhe Deer Hunter to me:didnt make much sense ,but well made and acted. I thought it was more about Kubriks growing paranoia than any real statement on rampant violence.

Actually Clockwork Orange is mainly about free will. It's a condemnation of using what amounts to torture and brainwashing to turn dirty old Alex into a good lad.
Parts of the Deerhunter are puzzling, but it has incredible power and it's portrait of industrial small time life in the USA and the impact on it of the Viet Namn war is terrific. Think of Deniro and the lads crooning the Four Seasons' hit Can't Take my Off of You, while they shoot pool in their local tavern. The Russian Roulette scenes in Viet Namn, while not literally true, are a fabulous tool to communicate the horror of combat there.

And, of course, Kubrick 'only' directed the film. The novel on which the film was based was by Anthony Burgess.

That's a book.

There's a good film on TCM tonight (9pm - Sky Ch. 319).

Unforgiven - Directed by Mr Eastwood himself, it won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actor.
